I look around the room, trying to get a sense of the time.

It’s bright outside. The sun is out. It doesn’t feel like early morning, but it’s hard to tell.

I’d guess it might be around lunchtime, but I have no solid evidence of that fact.

The breakfast food I’m eating makes me wonder if I’m being wishful.

I’m wishing the day away, waiting to find out if my Alpha and my mate have listened to the message I gave to Bianca to give to them. I doubt they’ll listen. Both of them are stubborn. It would take a lot to change their minds.

I let my knife slip and I slash my finger.

“Damn,” I cuss, putting the cutlery down.

“You’re done eating,” The Alpha tells me.

He gets up. I take one last sip of my juice and get up.

He looks at the cut and shakes his head.

“Partial shift that hand, right now.”

He’s pissed. His eyes are practically flashing with anger.

He doesn’t want one hair on my head injured, and one of my delicate little fingers is bleeding on his table. I’m supposed to be in perfect condition for whoever he’s sold me to. He’ll be angry if I’m not.

I partial shift my hand, just enough to let the wound heal.

His expression hardens. “This way,” he says, leading me out of the room.

I follow him back to my closet. I’m starting to understand what’s going on. I’ll find a way to screw this up for him. Whoever he’s sold me to isn’t going to want me when I’m through.

Chapter Ninety-Seven

Cheryl

Therideintotownis easier than we expect. The pack have dug potholes in the dirt track road and moved felled trees onto our path. With magic, those problems are solved without too much thought or energy involved. Rachel nudges the felled trees out of the way with a flick of her wrist. We cover the potholes with a basic spell that smooths out the ground.

Our only real trouble comes when we get a flat halfway there.

Rachel gets out first when we stop. I follow her around to the back of the car and we sigh at the same time. She shakes her head as she looks at me. “How did we miss that?”

There’s a row of silver spikes poking up through the ground, most of them hidden under the mud.

“The spell to even out the ground hid them. We got unlucky and the dirt shifted when we drove over this section,” I tell her, pointing it out.

Everett comes to my side. “Can you two move that with magic? We need to get it off the road. And check around in case there are more. I’ll change the tyre.”

“Levitation spell?” I ask Rachel.

She nods. “You know this one?”

“I know it.”

“Good. We’ll levitate it out of the ground and drop it so we can ball it up and get rid of it someplace safe. Ready?”

“Ready.”

We stand back a little and start the spell.
