Keeping my face stoic, I turned to Osirus and Braxton, who looked dazed, and tilted my head in amusement.Bring it on now, bitches. Of course, Osirus could see right through me and see my aura of excitement. He let out a hearty laugh as I finally cracked my smile.
Walking back over, I felt a tickle in my hand, held it up to look, and found a gigantic black spider sitting on it. I. Lost. It.
Screaming as if my butt was on fire, I flung my hand around, only for the spider to squeeze tighter. It was huge; it was holding my hand! Osirus frantically came up to me and held me tight, screaming at me about what was wrong.
“Spider! Oh, Gods! It is on me! Get it off!”
Osirus snatched both my hands and grabbed it with his bare hand. Braxton, Finley, and Everett were looking on in worry as they had dropped the workout stations they were manning. Osirus opened his hand to find a tiny spider, no larger than a pea.
“Would you see at that? It shrunk! Do they do that here?” I asked, worried, still shaking from the encounter.
The Red Fury’s boisterous laughter echoed across the training field. Osirus took the spider down in the grass. My lip wobbled as people were laughing at me. Maybe I couldn’t take care of myself, and I was just a joke.
“Darling, come here.” He held out his arms, and I buried my face in his chest to hide my face. He petted my head, chuckling along with everyone else. “It was just a spider. A small one, but just know I’ll always be here to protect you.”
I rubbed my face into his chest, and he kissed the top of my head. “I just don’t want to be this frail, useless human,” I mumbled.
“You are in a different world, Melina. You weren’t bred to be the strongest physically, but mentally you are. On the first day out of the palace, you helped an orphanage. You can spot trouble a mile away. We balance each other out. You will help the kingdom grow in ways I would have never thought of. The Goddess of Pairing chose you for me. Just because you can’t fight doesn’t make you weak.”
I sniffed, and I hugged him tighter.
Osirus always knew the right things to say. I could help in other ways, but the thought of him being alone during the fight troubled me. Where was I to go during all of this?
“You are handy with an axe. I say she keeps training,” Alaneo says proudly. “Have some self-defense training. That way, if it is needed, she has it.” Osirus nodded and agreed.
“Hey, Melina!” Braxton yelled across the field.
We all turned, waiting for him to speak.
“How big was that spider again?!” Braxton started laughing, and I narrowed my eyes. He was elbowing his brothers while they were laughing to themselves.
“About as big as your dick!” I snapped.
Howls of laughter seeped through the field. Braxton put his hand over his heart. “Harsh,” he mouthed.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Cosmo
“Daphne!”Iscreamedinour large home. The home was massive, and with just the two of us living here, it might have been seen as excessive, but I’d be damned if I had anything less. The cooks, the maids, the servants, and even the willing women were all worth it. All worth giving up my destined mate to have power within the Golden Light Kingdom, one of the strongest kingdoms in all of Bergarian.
“What is it, Father?” Daphne walked out in one of her new expensive gowns.
Lately, I had been showering her in jewels, dresses, and expensive lingerie for her to seduce the King. All of which had now been proven insignificant since he had his destined. Daphne should have worked harder and been stronger, smarter, and more seductive. She bedded him once, had the gall to order his servants around, and rubbed the King the wrong way.
“Have you seen him today?” I growled.
The little wench should have. I’d ordered her, trained her, and supplied her with all the ammunition. It was just her using it that was the damn problem.
“Yes, Father. He said that little human was his concubine and nothing more.” She flipped her fingers out to look at her nails as she fell to the couch. Not a worried bone in her body. That will change.
“Then you know she was in his bed chambers this evening, alone, with her all in a scantily clad silk robe, saying that she was his destined?” I all but growled. Her eyes fluttered up, and a deep scowl on her face presented.
“What do you mean?!” she yelled. “He said she was a concubine, a meaningless one. Just to get me off his back and stop nagging him. He isn’t keeping her!”
“Oh, he is keeping her and has claimed her as his. There is no mark, but who knows when that will happen? Did you not hear about the celebration in the marketplace? He claimed her for all to see. Your trip to the throne has been halted!” I threw my hands up in the air.
“For years, Daphne, you have been trained for this, to grab the throne, to put our family name in the history books, for us to gain power, prestige, and a talented army to overthrow the none the wiser Cerulean Moon Kingdom that is now a sitting duck at our feet. All for what? To sleep in his bed one night?” Daphne bit her lip back and narrowed her eyes.
