Osirus snaked his arm around my waist and pulled me in closer.

“Not to worry, a lot of things are changing, and it would be an excellent idea to involve the pixies. In fact, having a representative of all the fae cultures in Court instead of nobility would be preferred.”

Osirus continued to lead me through the path until we saw some light at the end of the forest.

The uneasiness of all this was daunting. How could I, a human, someone that wasn’t supposed to be here, end up in this situation? I should be back home, working on Alpha Ramirez’s accounting books and worrying about what I should make myself for dinner. I had lived in a cabin alone for a lot of my life, and now I was being thrust into a whole new culture and had to rule in it.

“Do not worry, darling. We are taking our time.” Osirus always knew my feelings, which I found extremely weird. It was like he had a sixth sense about it.

Another question for another time, I supposed. That list just kept on growing…

Chapter Fourteen

Melina

Comingoutofthedense forest and into the sunshine, we entered a bright meadow. Colors here in the Bergarian world were much more vibrant. The grass was so deep a green you could almost see hints of blue in it. The sky wasn’t just blue but also had purples swirled into it while the white clouds continued to float by. Several exotic birds, fairies, and pixies flew through the sky, and even deer roamed the meadow. None were afraid as we came deeper into the tall, lush grasses.

At the top of the hill, Osirus took my hand again and pointed to the east. “There, that is where we are going tomorrow.” The sky was so clear you could see for miles, just like on the mountain where my family arrived here. The forest was cut away from an area, and a mighty, light-colored castle stood among the valleys.

“That is our home, the castle.”

Feeling his gaze on the side of my face, I continued to stare at it. It appeared so far away, but even from here, you could understand how gigantic and majestic it was. Osirus tugged at my hand again and had me look to the west.

“And this is the Cerulean Moon Kingdom, the Shifter Kingdom.”

It was just as majestic as the Golden Light Kingdom, but the forest was dense around it, hidden from the light. “They like their cover, so they don’t have to shift in the middle of everyone.” He laughed. “I don’t know why. The fae aren’t really concerned with covering their bodies much.” Letting out a large gulp, Osirus squeezed my hand. “Don’t worry. They don’t walk around naked. Some women just like to wear scanty clothes, is all.”

Osirus led me to the south side of the hill and sat down, putting a long piece of grass in his mouth.

“This place is amazing,” I said while sitting down. “Were there humans here before? All of this is in fairy tales and storybooks back on Earth.”

Osirus nodded as he took the grass from his mouth.

“Yes, actually. There was a time when humans did roam around with us. Some supernaturals took it upon themselves to torture them, use them as slaves and blood bags—then Luna Clara’s parents took the throne and took it upon themselves to put them all back on Earth. That was about eleven hundred years ago. I’m sure those that were here benefited from creating some stories about the magical parts of the land. Some stories were greatly obscured.”

“Like what?” I began picking some of the purple daisies around us and tying them together.

“For one, witches eat little children. Ha, that Hansel and Gretel story around here gets a great laugh. Little Red Riding Hood? Wolves don’t eat people either.”

“That’s a relief,” I sighed. “I’ve been thinking about all those stories since I first found out about this place.” I chuckled. “What about vampires, though? Do they…?” I paused, waiting. Osirus rubbed his eyes and placed the grass back in his mouth.

“Yes, unfortunately, they do drink the blood of humans. They forced them a long time ago, sometimes going crazy and draining them completely. There are vampires on Earth now, but they are from a descendant that knew how to control their blood lust well. The vampires here get donations from several supernatural groups, such as witches and shifters, and even wild animals. Queen Taliyah of Vermillion has strict laws in place now that we are allowing humans to enter Bergarian again.”

“That’s good, then. I hope they can continue that.” I resumed fiddling with flowers.

Osirus continued to stare out over the view and a few questions popped up in my mind again. The rumors of how he was, what was true, what was not. He said he would always tell me the truth, but when was the right time to bring it up?

“Osirus?” I peeked up at him, catching him staring at me. My cheeks flushed, and I looked back down at my lap of flowers.

“What is it, darling?” His fingers pulled my chin up. I felt extremely guilty asking and being nosey, but I had to know if I was to stay here.

“You said you didn’t trick women into being with you, but what about the willing ones? Did you… date?” I looked down, embarrassed.

“Date?”

“Yes, like taking girls out… I guess… wooing them? Courting them?” Osirus chuckled lightly, then a big hearty laugh left his lips, and I couldn’t help but smile.

“It isn’t funny. I’m serious!” I gently pushed him, and he gave me a mischievous smirk. After he was done laughing, his face became more serious.
