“What about the Fae King? I’ve never seen a fae before.”

Carson stuck his nose up and grumbled. “Yeah, King Osirus is a trip, that’s for sure. They say he sleeps with anything with two legs and tosses them out of his palace once he’s done. He’s a trickster, and his own Court can’t stand him.”

“Well, you wolves do the same, and you know you have mates out there.” The boys sat back and gave a sigh. “Clara talks so highly of King Osirus, though. All day today, she talked about how wonderful the Fae King was and how much she respected him.” Carson rubbed his stubbled chin.

“I don’t know why they have such a good relationship, but the word around here is that the shifters should stay away. He’ll use his fae powers to bewitch any woman in his bed.” My heart sank a little. Clara didn’t mention that at all about him during our spa day.

Clara talked about how wonderful he was, passionate about the Fae Kingdom and warmhearted, but was deeply misunderstood. Even she had trouble cracking the King of the Fae, letting him know that his mate would grace his presence one day to finally break his unbreakable wall.

Things got quiet. The only thing you could hear was the playing of the string instruments. Many were mumbling softly. I continued to stare straight ahead, listening to the music, until Carson tapped my shoulder. “That, over there, is the Fae King.” Looking to my left, on the other side of the aisle from me, was the epitome of a fae king.

His hair was long and white as first fallen snow, with a few braids longer than his free-flowing hair. His robes were pristine white with small amounts of green leaves embroidered into the expensive material. Gold threading was easily seen throughout his tunic and trousers. His cape matched his royal clothing, pristine white as the underside sparkled with gold. He wasn’t a fae. He looked like an angel. His features were sharp, and he looked tall just from sitting down so elegantly. If I stood next to him, I was sure I would see him eye to eye. I was holding my breath as I took in this beautiful creature. Not once in my life had my heart skipped a beat for any man, even in my youth, crushing over some boy. There really was a time for everything then.

Carson shook my shoulder, and I blinked a few times and turned to him. “Are you all right? You spaced out there.”

I shook my head and realized that Tulip was getting ready to walk down the aisle. Everyone stood up, and when I turned my body to face Tulip as she passed between the Fae King and me, my eyes looked directly into his.

His face was perfect. There was no other way to describe him. His sharp jawline, unwavering stare, and beautiful golden eyes felt like they reached the depths of my conscience. My heart fluttered as he stood there, unmoving and unemotional. I swore I saw a faint curl of his lip, but Carson grabbed my hand quickly and had me sit down.

“Melina, what is wrong?” Carson whisper-yelled at me.

Carson and Sean were looking around and staring down at the Fae King. I was too embarrassed to see what was going on, so I stayed in my seat and continued to look forward. My heart pounded in my chest, my hand brushing the heat of my chest away with my fingertips.

What the hell was that?

Clara stood up at the front as Tulip and Alec were saying their vows. A few times, she would glance at me and give me a wink. Everyone is so weird.

I could see why so many women fell for this Fae King, satisfied with only sleeping with him for one night. He was breathtaking. An angel, if not a God. If I could hear his voice, it would make it all the better. My heart felt tight, thinking that I couldn’t pursue any of it. He was just a player, like the rest of them. All men were. They just wanted one thing. My heart was already broken enough to be used and thrown away like that. I wasn’t one to give away their love so quickly.

As the ceremony continued, I could feel the warriors behind me on the edge of their seats. Their body language showed they were upset, and the constant whisperings weren’t helping me concentrate on the ceremony. I was just a human. The Fae King was just curious about what I was, just like Carson, Rex, and Sean were. I’d do my best to stay away from the god beside me because I would not become just another one of his bedmates.

Chapter Nine

Osirus

“Doyouthinkyourmystery siren girl is here somewhere?” Alaneo mentioned as I pulled my cape around my neck.

The brothers had slept late, clear until we were supposed to be there in just under an hour. They had drunk all their ale and then went into the packhouse in the middle of the night and stole some werewine. Werewine was much more potent than ours, so of course, they got drunk off their arses.

Alaneo woke with me early, as always, and we trained in the wolves’ warrior training arena since most were tending to the Princess’s requests for cleaning and preparing for the mating ceremony. She had really gone overboard, more so than her own mating ceremony; it only made me wonder what Clara had up her sleeve.

Alaneo came back over and slapped me on the shoulder. “Did you hear me at all, Your Majesty? Is your head in the clouds?” he chided.

I gave a small smirk and took the cufflinks off the dresser. “I don’t know, Alaneo, but I pray to the Gods she will be there.” Alaneo slumped down in a vacant chair as we heard the brothers screaming at each other to stop using the hot water.

“You know, maybe shewasa siren. The way you talked this morning on the training fields about her singing, she might be one. She just has you captivated under her spell until she will lure you into the waters.”

“She is not a siren.” I sighed. “She was fully clothed and ran from the water like someone was running for her life because some nitwit wanted to come to find me.” I scoffed as I finished checking my appearance in the mirror.

If I was to find this damsel, I was damn well going to look like a king. I’ll take whatever crutch I can get because this girl— woman—was different. I could sense it through my magic. It zapped my heart like electricity.

“Let’s go. I want to get a good seat,” Alaneo said as he walked out the door.

If this girl was who I thought she was, this might be the last day I spent alone. I could have my mate in my arms. Letting out a heavy sigh, I followed Alaneo to the packhouse.

The inside of the packhouse was pristine. Everything had been dusted, cleaned, and flowers flowed over the foyer. Even though the party was to be outside, Clara had ensured the mating ceremony’s essence trickled into her home. Alaneo had already made his way to the kitchen, sneaking snacks and whatnot. While I waited for him to return, I headed to the back part of the house where the back deck stood and where most of the wolves had retreated. I was to be one of the last ones to be escorted since I was of high nobility.

A glimmer caught my eye as I looked to my left. It was a girl standing next to the stairs, looking through the large window. Her eyes were wide with curiosity as her hand laid gently on the clear pane. Her hair was done up in loose, dark curls that framed her face, the tendrils touching her neck and shoulders effortlessly. I was completely enamored by her; she was more beautiful than Aphrodite herself. Her aura was glowing more so than I had ever seen. Golden light whipped around her with small bits of dark smoke that would encompass her heart. She may have looked lively and happy on the outside, but her aura told me something different. She was sad and conflicted, possibly depressed.
