Ialmostdidn’tmakeit.

Hell, it was too close.

I swung the door open to reveal a bloodied Esteban, the bastard that tried to steal Melina the first time I laid eyes on her. He wanted her, and I knew he did. I saw the possessive look in his eyes, but in the past month, I had heard nothing of his whereabouts. Esteban was supposed to be on Earth, back in his home pack, but he escaped.

How did his Alpha not know he was missing? Could he not sense when a pack member was missing from his pack? Putting thoughts aside, I saw my darling covered in blood, and it wasn’t just Esteban’s, but her own as well.

“Melina!” I screamed as I burst through the door.

Clara immediately pulled Esteban by the leg to pull him away. He sputtered and leaked blood from his neck until Clara cracked his neck, causing him to stop his frantic movements. Melina had done a number on him, slashes down his face, and bite marks near crucial arteries. Even though she was not trained for any type of hand-to-hand combat, she knew the vital points where she needed to make a dent in a wolf.

Necks were crucial to werewolves. They were soft and not entirely covered in muscle and bone, with significant arteries running through them. There was a good chance of getting an excellent shot.

Melina was now lying in my arms. Her leg was bleeding, but she had a shirt wrapped tightly around her leg. The bleeding had slowed, but her abdominal muscles and arms were still bleeding heavily. Picking her up, she continued to sob as I held her close to my chest. I was covered in her blood, and terrible scenarios played through my head. What if she didn’t make it?

Running up the stairs, there was utter chaos. Kane was yelling for warriors to retrieve the body to be sure the fucker was dead. A few rounds of my soldiers ran through to the dungeon and checked for any remnants of magic that could cause some other uprising here in the palace. We didn’t know if Esteban was working with anyone and could never be too sure.

Upon arriving in the healer’s quarters, the bed was already prepared for her. The firm surface was quickly covered in her blood as three healers attacked her wounds. Several bottles of antiseptic were poured on her leg and arm. Another started using sealing magic to heal the inside of her body.

“Her womb is still intact, Your Majesty.”

I grunted in understanding. That was the least of my worries. If she couldn’t give me children, to hell with it. All I needed was her. Melina continued to moan out for me, telling me she was sorry for making a mess. Like anyone cared. She was my warrior Queen and a damn strong one, too.

She took on a high-ranking warrior with years of skills under his belt while she had nothing. The healers threw some incense on a burner beside her head and wafted the smoke to her nostrils. Her eyes drooped as she complained about being ready for our ceremony. There would be no ceremony today. She needed her strength, and I needed her.

“Just sleep, darling. The party will wait for us.” Melina quickly succumbed to her darkness as I sighed out in relief. She was no longer in pain.

“She will recover. These wounds are deep, but no vital organs were struck. In fact, with her siren and fae abilities, she should be healed in three days when she wakes up and can carry out the ceremonies.” The healer bowed as he cleaned up the blood. Attendants lifted her body so they could place medicine on her lips, and she instantly swallowed.

Once she was cleaned, I stayed in the room with her. I wasn’t planning on leaving her. I’d answer questions as they came and decide about crucial matters with the kingdom right at her bedside.

Melina was now dressed in a long purple nightgown that made her wounds easily accessible. I had initially bought it for her to be easily assessable in other ways, but this worked too. I smirked as her hand twitched toward mine. Grabbing it, I brought her hand to my lips while I kissed her knuckles.

A few days went by, and Melina barely moved. Healers removed bandages, and each day they closed more and more. The bruises left on her neck were gone, and the scrapes on her shoulder and leg had healed. What remained were a few light scratches on her torso.

Becoming anxious, I hovered over her. Each slight twitch made my heart jump, thinking she was waking up to me. My mind raced how she would react to what happened to her. Would she leave me because I couldn’t protect her? Trying to push the thought away, I kept my anger toward Esteban. He was indeed dead, and the kingdom made an enormous bonfire and threw his remnants into the burning flames to make sure of it.

Many demanded Cosmo to be burned alongside the traitor. I was hoping to reserve a trial for him, point out every single flaw to ruin the name he had spent so many years trying to build for himself. Still, I had been too preoccupied with my thoughts of Melina and her recovery.

“I’ll take care of it,” my father growled. “Your people demand justice, and I will see to it.” My father, the previous ruler, taking Cosmo to his grave, was a good thing. Father had Cosmo stripped of his wings in front of a crowd of roaring fans. Wolves included started howling with glee, watching the primary leader of all their sufferings fall. My father comprised a small list of all of Cosmo’s wrongdoings, such as treason against the King.

Cosmo was then tied to a post while the people gathered clothes that were made to keep their wings concealed around his feet. This didn’t silence the people as they threw their torches into the growing pile of wood, clothing, and tax papers. Cosmo continued to struggle, calling them all hopeless, and the downfall of the Golden Light Kingdom was near until his last breath.

Lost in thought, I wiped Melina’s head with a wet cloth until I heard footsteps near.

“Your Majesty.” Everett stepped in our bedchambers. I had Melina moved as soon as the rapid healing took place. I wanted her comfortable and away from the noise of the bustling of the palace. It had become too noisy for my liking, and I knew she would appreciate being in our room together when she woke.

“Yes, Everett?”

Everett smiled up at me and pulled along a small fae woman with sleek, dark hair. “This is my mate, Sundew. I wanted you to be the first to meet her.” I stood up and warmly smiled. He wanted to let me greet his mate first before his brothers. An honor itself. Then again, we were all brothers, not by blood.

“It is certainly nice to meet you.” I bowed slightly as she bowed almost too low.

“It is my honor, Your Majesty!” Her face flushed and hid half her body behind Everett.

Everett held his hand behind her back to move her forward, but she stuck to him like honey. “I would also like to tell you, Braxton has found his mate, but it is certainly unorthodox. He wants an audience with the witches who understand the scientific properties of bonding.” Everett gave a sad smile as I questioned.
