Kane growled in approval while I unsheathed my sword as I jumped from my horse.
“What are we getting into, Tulip?”
Tulip stood in front of the supposed doorway. “Once you enter, you will find yourself in their courtyard. It is built like a castle on the inside. Four walls surround the perimeter. The basement holds the potions and spell books. Prinna is usually situated down there, but it has the most protection spells in that area. You won’t be able to regenerate. Don’t go down there if you can’t handle being wounded. Shots fatal to humans will be fatal to you.”
“Understood?” Kane growled as he licked his maw. Men and women shifted back into their wolves and growled in agreement. Kane, again, led the charge. We all burst into the courtyard that was swimming with witches and warlocks. Many held fireballs, ice streams, and some had electricity dancing on their fingers. The pure hatred in their eyes was daunting, but we never wavered.
Within seconds, hell broke loose as the wolves, and my men battled. My men were encouraged to use their gifted powers, and it didn’t disappoint. Several fae had force-fields that glowed around their bodies, and no spell could touch them. Some had strength that matched an ogre’s. Several even spouted out electricity from their chests. Swords swung and claws ripped into bare flesh as the witches and warlocks tried to maintain the fight.
My sword swung as a jolt of electricity was flung at my back. Slitting the opponent’s throat in front of me, the witch behind me took it as an opportunity to dig her nails into my back. Shaking my head, I pushed myself off the ground, causing the witch to fall backward as I lunged forward and impaled her with my sword. Not waiting to see if the light left her eyes, I pulled it out to head to the basement.
I was going to kill the Queen of this operation. Once the Queen of this evil hive was destroyed, then all hope for the coven to revive itself later would be lost. Kane was howling, taking on three or four witches at a time. Their spells had no effect as he swiped at them once, causing them to fall to the floor.
Tulip called for me at the corner of the courtyard. Rushing to her, I saw the dried blood on her chest. Alec wasn’t far, he was keeping the witches preoccupied so they would not detect us. “Down here,” she rushed. “Prinna is hiding there. She doesn’t think anyone will get in. There is a ward hiding her smell, but I know she is there,” Tulip panted. “That’s where she kept them.” She let out a whimper. “They are all gone, all the prisoners. Alec won’t let me go down, but Alpha will join you in a moment.”
“Leave Tulip, your job is done.” Before she said another word, I rushed down the stairs, my hair flying about as the wind blew upward. The stairs were dark, wet, and the smell of mold tickled my nose. Drips of water hit the puddles as I quickly stomped through the mess.
The smell of urine, blood, and feces became stronger as I passed by a few cells. Pixies laid dead in the corner. I tightened my grip around the sword. They took all the blood their little bodies had. I would make Prinna suffer. I would drain her of her own blood and let the dragon shifters eat her body.
As I rounded the corner, there was chanting. The loose locks of her hair covered her face as Prinna sat with her legs crossed around a pentagram circle on the floor. Candles surrounded her as a newborn fawn laid dead on one side of the ring and a live snake on the other. It hissed and coiled up as it saw me as I approached the lighted room.
My footsteps were light as I came forward. My tunic was ripped down the middle as my chest was shown bear to the light. I tried to will myself to absorb as much light as the candles could give me. Her aura was dark, the darkest black and purples I had ever seen. This witch was a new type of evil; it almost surpassed the Rogue King Clara had fought a few months ago.
Her melancholy laugh echoed through the basement walls. “Welcome, Fae King. Where is your little mate?” My fangs emerged as I held a tightened grip with both hands on my sword. “You know that little bitch ruined my damn plans, right?”
Prinna’s body lifted off the floor without moving her muscles; her body was limp as she floated closer to me. The long hair had her face completely covered as it hungover on the front of her chest.
“I haven’t lost yet, Fae King. I still have my ways of getting what I want. I just will need to be less diplomatic.”
I went to swing my sword, and it hovered over my head and held its place in the air. The more I tried to move my arms, the more pain I felt in my wrists.
My whole body was shaking as I now tried to move my legs. They were stuck to the floor, like a fly on sticky paper. Prinna laughed cruelly as she approached. Her hair showed the left side of her old face. Prinna was once said to be beautiful, but the black magic she used took her appearance. Black magic gave you the power, but it took something in return until its just dues were paid back.
“I’m this close”—she pinched her fingers—“this close to getting the blood I need to make this coven unstoppable. While you bided your time hunting us down, I had my best warlocks finding your dragon in his lonely cave.” She cackled. “That had to be the easiest diversion I’ve ever imagined!”
This bitch...
“So you would sacrifice half your coven for a diversion?” I spat.
“Of course. Only a witch of my caliber would understand such sacrifices. Only the strong will be left, and once the dragon’s blood has been obtained, I’ll fix my looks and take control of not only Bergarian, but Earth as well.”
Prinna’s rotten teeth gleamed in the low light as she continued her insults. On the other hand, I was working on releasing something darker than she thought. Prinna used Dark magic to expel her power, and with most fae being of Light magic, it could cripple us instantly. I felt my darker power surge forth, wrapping around my light and storing it until I could use it once again. Feeling my aura change from a sunny yellow to a bright red, my wings blackened behind me. Prinna stopped laughing as she saw my brightened skin become tan as I twitched my fingers.
It took me time to switch over. I haven’t had the chance to enhance my skill, but I was faring better than anticipated. Prinna hiked her skirt as I could move one of my legs and took out a dagger; being able to dodge at the last moment, she pushed the blade into my right shoulder. I howled out in pain, gripping the bloodied wound. Before I repositioned myself, she stabbed the other shoulder and pushed me to the ground.
“Impossible, you are a Light fae!” Prinna sat above me as I struggled to complete my new form; I could feel the whites of my eyes grow dark, and hers widened. She pulled the knife from my arm as I wrestled her. Two shoulders were maimed, and I was now the same physical strength as this witch. I pushed her off me, but the pressure she had on my chest became unbearable.
“Do you hear that?” She smirked as she held the knife to my throat. The wolves began howling, whimpering, and yipping. “That is the anti-healing surge. I completed it before you arrived, and it is now just kicking in. Your wolves will no longer regenerate while my coven can.”
A shot of adrenaline fueled my anger as I threw her off me. I had to destroy her on my own. I could no longer wait for Kane while he saved his own wolves. The dagger at my side brushed my thigh as I pulled it from its smaller sheath. Prinna’s nails elongated with black sludge dripping from them.
I felt my chest tighten as I took a knee. My body had almost completed itself, and the darkness was too much to bear. A nearby mirror showed black veins coming from my chest as it seeped through my neck. Prinna gritted her teeth as she lunged to my weakening form.
Holding my arm out for the brace of impact, her body stopped with the dagger still hanging in the air. She continued to push through, but to no avail.
“No,” she growled. “You can’t!”
“Fight fire with fire, huh, Prinna? The Goddess thinks so.”
