Liv closed her eyes and groaned.

“How are you going to make this right?” Ben said.

“I may not be able to.”










Chapter Nine

When Liv walked intothe office, all eyes were on her. She didn’t even go to her desk. She walked straight to Senator Sterling’s door and knocked. Sweat pooled under her arms. Had she put on deodorant this morning - god, she hoped so?

He motioned her in, and she shut the door behind her.

She slowly sat down in the chair across from his desk.

He watched her - waiting for an explanation.

“You should probably fire me,” she said.

“I should.”

“I did that podcast weeks ago,” she said. “I had honestly forgotten about it.”

He just stared at her; his lips in a straight line.

“The timing was bad.”

He scoffed. The crease between his brow grew deeper.

She fiddled with her hands in her lap.

“Don’t fire me,” she blurted out.

He looked at her in surprise. “I thought you didn’t care about this job.”

She exhaled loudly.

“The truth is we both need each other,” she said, her shoulders slumping.
