Fena turns to face me. For a moment, she appears clueless and then the meaning of my words hits her. She snaps her fingers and drops the cup in her hand on the table.
"Oh, that!"
Yeah, that, Fena. Not long ago, I sent her to the city to find out whatever she can about the High Ridge wolves, their locations and where they operate.
This is her way of figuring out where Adeline's brothers are keeping her. Fena has a credible source in Blood Born who is, in fact, a mole in the High Ridge pack. According to this source, Adeline's brothers haven't been at the mansion for some days. They saw no sign of Adeline, either.
If I wanted to make someone disappear without a trace, it would be unwise to keep such a person in their own home. Adeline's brothers are smart, especially Lawrence. The last place he’d lock his sister in is their family mansion. I’m desperate to find out the other possible places he could be using to keep her. She must be terrified.
Luke, there's one more thing you haven't thought about.
"No," I mutter to myself.
I don't even want to think about it. However, I've been pushing it to the back of my mind but it always surfaces, burying me in the depth of an encompassing depression.
What if Adeline’s dead? What if I’m going to end up finding the dead body of the woman I love?
"I didn't find much." Fena's voice banishes the horrible thought.
I press my hands to the sides of my head. "Tell me."
"They have most of their homes in the southern part of the city," Fena answers. "I found out that Lawrence and Damian have been going to a particular home at Riverside."
I shoot to my feet, staring wide-eyed at Fena. "Lawrence? That's where he's keeping her."
Fena sees me reaching for my jacket. "Where are you going?"
I slip my hands into the sleeves. "Where's this place?"
"You're not going there, are you?" Fena chuckles. "Unbelievable! You're going to barge into a home of full High Ridge wolves just to save your woman."
I ignore her, heading for the door. "Where's this place, Fena? You said Riverside?"
"Stop it! You're only going to kill yourself." Fena blocks my way. She peers into my eyes, her glare boring into the core of reasoning. It's like she infuses my senses back into me.
"But I have no choice!" I shout, turning around to hide my frustration from Fena. It burns so powerfully every deep breath I take does nothing to soothe it. "I have to save her, Fena. She's alone out there. She needs me."
"If you step out of this cabin, you're going out there to dig your grave," Fena tells me. "We have to come up with a plan."
I sit on the couch. "A plan? You and me? What can we possibly do to save Addy?"
"Go into the house and I'll be your lookout."
I brighten up at that idea. It would be great having another wolf watching the area for me while I try to look for Adeline. As a wolf, Fena would be able to pick out their scent from afar off and alert me.
"Are you going to howl when you catch their scent?" I ask her as we walk out of the cabin.
"No, silly. The wolves are going to know my howl isn't part of theirs. The alert word is Red Tomatoes."
"Red Tomatoes?"
Fena shrugs. "I love tomatoes."
We shift and race towards the road that leads to the regions where the High Ridge wolves operate.
It's not easy blending into the night and trying to avoid the enemies picking up our scent. But Fena has a thing for trees. She swings from one to the other, avoiding the grounds where the wolves creep. I use the trees as cover too, but I'm not as adept as she is.
We soon arrive at the house where Fena discovered Adeline's brothers visiting. It looks empty, a somewhat abandoned house with dingy windows and fading brown doors.
