“You think he’s doing drugs?”
I shrug. “Honestly, yes. I’ve never seen him like that. He was agitated and kept pacing and looking around, scratching his skin. His eyes looked like he hasn’t slept in days and his clothes weren’t even clean.”
“Oh my.”
“I know.”
“What did the police say?”
“Charlie, you remember him? Brock and I graduated with him. Anyway, he was there and he said it looked like he was doing…” I lower my voice to just above a whisper, “cocaine.”
She gasps loudly. “Noooo.”
I nod. “That’s what he thought, but of course he doesn’t know for sure. It was just the way he was acting and talking with them, I guess. After I’m done here I have to go to the station.”
“Would you like me to come with you?”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“I know I don’t, but I offered which means I don’t mind being there with you.”
“Thank you. I’m not even sure what I’m supposed to do when I get there but I feel like I need to go talk to Dale, too.”
“He’s been concerned for Wyatt.”
“He has?”
“He talked to Stone last week. Dale said something’s not right with him but he thought it started before the divorce.”
“If it did, I didn’t notice.”
“You probably weren’t paying attention, though. And that’s not a criticism. You were doing your best to distance yourself and rightfully so.”
“Maybe.”
“After we eat we’ll go talk to Dale. Maybe he’ll come to the station with us.”
I groan. “This isn’t at all how I thought my day would go.”
She chuckles. “I have no doubt. Did you tell Brock?”
I wince. “No. I’m afraid he won’t be too happy, either.”
“That you haven’t told him? Yeah, he’ll be upset. That it happened? He’ll be even more upset about that.”
Our waitress brings our meals and we thank her before starting to eat.
“What else is new with you?” Leah asks.
“Not much. I think our friend Paisley who Corbin and I met when we were on our little vacation is going to come stay with me for a few days. We told her about the festival and she thought it sounded fun.”
“Corbin mentioned it. I asked around a bit and it sounds like there will be an opening next school year in the area she’s wanting to teach. Has she checked it out yet?”
I nod. “She has, actually. I think she’s hoping to have an interview while she’s here.”
“Oh, wonderful!”
I finish chewing and swallow my bite of burger. “I know. She’s so much fun and we hit it off quickly. Corbin and I would love to have her here.”
