I smile at the phone. She tacked on a straight-faced emoji at the end.

Me:Get a little bit of food in your stomach so you don’t pass out from low blood sugar or something and I’ll bring over dinner pretty soon.

Naomi:You’re bossy.

Me:Caring about you is being bossy?

Naomi:Yes.

Me:Noted.

I’m still smiling when Corbin knocks on my open office door before entering.

“I have an idea and my idea means I’ll be out of the office for a couple days.”

“What’s your idea?”

“I want to take Naomi to a spa retreat thing.”

“Spa retreat thing? What’s that?”

She rolls her eyes at my ignorance. “Like a hotel with a killer spa. Massages, facials, mani pedis. That type of thing.”

“Ahh. Where is it?”

“There’s a few in Nashville but I’m thinking Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge. Just a few hours away so not far but I think it would be good for her.”

“And you.”

“Come again?”

I lean back in my office chair. “Good for both of you. Been a while since you took any sort of vacation, Cor. Been a while for all of us, actually, but that’s not the point. Definitely go. It’s a great idea.”

“Yeah? I’ll be out of the office,” she reminds me.

“And? We got it covered here. When are you thinking?”

“Not sure yet. I need to talk to her first.”

“Don’t let her say no. Y’all both need to get away and deserve some pampering.”

She watches me closely for a few beats then nods.

“I’m bringing dinner to her pretty soon,” I tell her and watch as her eyes grow big. “She hasn’t eaten today. Said something about a writing cave, which I have no clue what that means, but assume it means she’s been writing and working all day and hasn’t given herself a break.”

“She’s been writing all day?” she asks, her eyes twinkling. “That’s freaking amazing, Brock. She hasn’t had the mindset to write a lot lately considering all that was going on.”

I grunt. “Don’t like that she’s not taking care of herself to get the writing done, though.”

Corbin grins. “She’s a big girl and can take care of herself.”

“Right,” I grunt again.

She gives me a big smile and lets out a little squeal. “Now that I’ve got the spa stuck in my head, I’m gonna see about reservations so when I ask her to join me, I have some dates that they’re available.”

She rushes out of my office like she’s afraid I’ll change my mind, which is confusing. We’re equals here so it’s not like she needs my permission to take time off.

I make a call to the diner to order the food then shut down my computer and head out of the office to get my girl fed. Well, she’s notmygirl. Yet. But she’s always been my girl.
