“For now,” he confirms. “It’ll get processed at the station.”

“What if…” I pause and look at Brock then back to Charlie. “He was so angry at me and I’m afraid he’ll try to pin it on me since the new stuff was in my home.”

“You got a Ring camera, yeah?” I nod. “I noticed it earlier. Pull the recording from when he was here and how he was shouting for his stuff. That would help your case if it comes to that.”

“It won’t,” Dale insists emphatically. “I’ll make sure of it.”

“Thanks for your help, Charlie,” Duke tells him. “Appreciate you stopping by.”

After telling him goodbye and thanking him again, Dale and Duke announce that it’s time for them to head out as well. It’s already eight o’clock at night but feels like midnight for how tired I am.

I plop down on the couch and Brock follows, draping an arm over the back and playing with my hair.

“Your mom wants me to call her.”

“They can wait.”

I lift my head and raise my eyebrows. “You going to be the one to tell her?”

He groans and pulls his phone out of his pocket, shooting off a quick text.

“They’ll be here shortly,” he grumbles.

I giggle. “Shocking.”

He rolls his eyes. “You know we’re never going to have privacy, right?”

“And why would we need privacy?” I tease.

He pulls me into his lap and threads his fingers through my hair. “I can think of a few things.”

The kiss he gives me makes my toes curl. It’s incredible how easy it is with him. I wondered if it would be awkward, having been friends for so long and given the day we had. But it’s the exact opposite.

Unfortunately, we’re once again interrupted.

“You have a lot of explaining to do, young lady!” Corbin’s voice shouts.

I jerk away from Brock and scramble to stand up only to be staring at not only Corbin but also Leah, Stone, my dad, Cash, Boone, and Cody.

“So this is new,” Cody says, pointing between Brock and me. “’Bout time, right, Dad? Isn’t that what you said?”

“That’s what I said,” Boone confirms, grinning.

“How close were you?” Brock wants to know.

Leah shrugs. “We were waiting a few blocks away.”

“Why am I not surprised?”

My dad steps forward and wraps me in his arms, hugging me tightly.

“We need the full story. Now. And we’ll discuss later why I wasn’t told about this sooner.”

I groan. “Do I have to?”

He gives me a hard look and I gulp. “Fine. But can we eat something? I’m starving and it’s been a heck of a day.”

Leah jumps into action, opening my cupboards and refrigerator. Soon she’s throwing together food I didn’t even know I had and creating a meal out of it.
