But I could feel the lust stirring inside me, and I knew we had to let go unless something else happened. With Camilla awake and likely to pop in at any moment, that was a terrible idea.
“You’d better go. Take a shower and do it fast so that I’m not tempted to jump in there with you.”
With a mischievous grin, she backed away. “All right, but you’d be welcome…” she trailed off, slowly pulling at the waistband of her robe.
I covered my eyes and turned away, making her laugh.
“Get out of here!” I said with a fake yell, and I heard her scamper away.
I put the rest of the dishes in the dishwasher, excited for the day.
This could be my real life,I thought with a smile.
CHAPTER16
CASSIE
“So,what ice cream flavor do you want?” I asked Camilla as she bounced around next to me, holding my hand as we stood in front of the ice cream shop in the park.
It was cool in November, but not cold. That’s what was great about being in New Orleans. One could have ice cream any time of the year, and they didn’t even blink an eye.
“I don’t know yet…What about you?”
I knelt down next to her with the menu board in front of us. I tapped my chin.
“Well, there is cotton candy, which is great, but I love peanut butter and chocolate. I adore it. I think I might get a cup of that.”
“Not a cone?” Camilla asked, her pretty eyes watching me with confusion.
“A cone’s okay, but I always think they give you more when you get a cup. I think it’s a big ice cream secret.”
She nodded, eyes wide, taking in the information as if I was imparting great knowledge. It made me laugh and made my heart light. I never wanted children, but if I came into a relationship where my partner already had a kid, I wouldn’t mind that. Especially if the child was Camilla.
What are you doing? You’re thinking about Brad as if you’re together? Stop it. Stop it now!
I stood, and Camilla kept reading the menu. Brad had gone to go to the bathroom, and when I turned around, I spotted him coming toward us. I sucked in a breath. Did he know how handsome he was? And sexy? And craveable? If that was even a word.
He wore shorts and a loose white button down. He was smiling as he got closer, and with his hair not slicked back but more tousled, he looked younger, happier, more relaxed.
“Decided yet?” he asked, his hand coming to rest on my lower back.
“Chocolate peanut butter please. In a cup. Camilla’s still thinking.”
“Got it! Cotton candy.”
Brad grimaced. “Gross, but all right. Your wish is my command.” He turned to go, and Camilla stopped him.
“But a cup, Daddy. Not a cone! Cassie says you get more with a cup.”
He looked at me with a smirk, and I shrugged innocently.
“All right, then. Cup for you two, and I’ll go the old-fashioned route with a cone.”
He left me and Camilla on our own, and we waited excitedly for our ice cream. When Brad came back, he handed ours to us, and then I saw what he ordered.
“Vanilla?! Look, Camilla, your dad ordered vanilla on a cone.” I pointed at him, and Camilla and I laughed.
“What? It’s totally normal. Vanilla is good!” The way he fought back with such passion was so adorable, I wanted to cry.
