“Don’t be crazy.” I roll my eyes and step back. “Women have had babies since the beginning of time.”
“But not my baby,” he mutters and rakes a hand through his hair. The dark strands remain standing in all directions.
He’s so freaking adorable. My big bad boy is a mushy hot mess over a collection of cells that look like a pumpkin seed. Just wait until he sees her for the first time. Okay. It’s too soon to know if she’s a she or she’s a he, but I refuse to call her an it, so she’s a she until we know. I rest my hand on my stomach.
“Are you okay? Is something wrong?” He lurches forward and grabs my shoulders.
“Yes. You’re neurotic, which is what’s wrong.” I laugh at his expression.
“Bite me.”
I waggle my eyebrows. “I’d love to.”
“I bet you would.” He leers at me and then groans. “Damn, Baby, you kill me. You think I’m neurotic about the baby. I’m so eaten up over you, I can’t think straight.” He cups the back of my head and lowers his mouth until his lips brush mine. “And I don’t ever want to see straight again.”
Knock. Knock.A light rapping at the door causes me to jump backward, hitting my hip into the exam table.
“Yes?” My heart thunders in my chest. I feel like I was caught with my pants down and my legs wrapped around him. And if the doctor hadn’t interrupted us, in another five minutes, I would have been.
The door opens open, and Dr. Vanderburg peeks inside. Her eyes travel over us as if she’s trying to gauge how comfortable we’ve made ourselves. “Hello, Kinsley.” She smiles and pushes a cart with her laptop perched on top into the room. “I’m sorry to keep you waiting.” She shifts her gaze from me to Leo. “I’m Dr. Vanderburg.” She shoves out her hand. “And you are?”
“I’m Leo Radcliff.” He grasps her hand in a quick handshake.
“Leo Radcliff?” She frowns as they let go. “That name sounds familiar.” She studies him for a second, and then her eyes widen. “Oh….”
His eyes narrow into slits. “I promise I’m not like that with Kinsley. I was bored and going through the motions.”
“He’s right.” I bite my lips together to keep from laughing. “He’s not anything like the video.”
She gives him a pointed look. “What video?”
“Never mind.” Leo’s face flushes.
“I was going to say I saw the press release regarding Kinsley’s abduction and the arrest of the criminals. I read you were involved in her rescue.”
“Yes, my friends and I found out who’d kidnapped her and got her away before she was seriously injured.” He shudders. “Or killed.”
“Very nicely done.” She smiles at him. “I also saw you last year in Vegas at the casino. My husband and I went there for our anniversary. You were with one of your business partners.”
“Yes.” He nods. “We own several businesses and casinos. And forget I said anything about videos.”
She purses her lips together and clicks on the mouse. “That’s probably a sound decision.”
Leo crosses his arms over his chest as she bites back a laugh. “I’m serious. It was a bad time in my life.”
“Good to know.” She glances at the screen. “And I believe you. That was not a very powerful performance by any stretch of the imagination, but as you’ve clearly gotten Kinsley pregnant, and she’s vouching for you, I’ll take you at your word.”
I climb onto the exam table. “This is fantastic.”
“No, it’s not,” Leo growls. “Now you see why I moved to the Midwest.” His eye widen, and he snaps his fingers. “I’ve got it. We need to fix my reputation by making our own sex tape.”
“Not going to happen. When I brought it up the other day, I was joking.” But when my skin tightens, I question whether it’s as bad of an idea as I’m letting on.
“I like your sense of humor. You’ll be good for Kinsley.”
“Thank you.” He smiles like a star pupil when all he has to do is be a smartass. Like that’s a skill set.
“I apologize for the delay in getting to you. I had a couple of extra patients thrown into the mix this morning.” She pins Leo with a look. “By the way, I love my job. And as much as I’d like to only have a few patients, my other patients need me. And Kinsley is not a hot house flower.”
