“Yes, he would have.”

The curtain slides open wider, and the nurse I spoke to steps inside the exam room. “Dr. McGill will be with you in a couple of seconds. He’s going over your test results.”

“Thank you.” Ann drops my hand and swipes her palm over her jeans. Yeah, like I suspected. I need a shower.

The nurse’s eyes widen. “I’m so sorry. I was going to find your boyfriend, but an ambulance pulled up. I completely forgot.”

Relief sweeps through me. He’s not mad at me. Thank God. “It’s fine.”

“Don’t worry. As soon as the doctor comes in, I’ll get him.” Ann smiles. “See. I told you. Everything will be fine.”

“Hello, I’m Dr. McGill.” A man in a white coat walks into the exam space pushing a portable stand with a laptop perched on top. After the nurse leaves, the gray-haired physician scans the screen. “You must be Ms. Monroe?”

“Yes, I am.”

The faster he gives me a clean bill of health, the quicker I can find Leo. I don’t want to wait for Ann to find him. I need to see his chocolate brown eyes. I need his solid frame pressed against me, proving he’s safe. That’s the only thing I need.

He looks up from his notes and smiles. “As your friend was saying when I stepped into the room, everything is fine. You have nothing to worry about.” He clears his throat. “Is it fine to speak in front of your guest?”

“Yes, of course.”

“I’m not sure if you were aware, but you’re pregnant. However, that had nothing to do with your moment of unconsciousness. That was the direct result of adrenaline flooding into and out of your body. And there won’t be any long-term damage to the baby from that episode either.” He pats my hand. “I recommend resting for the next 24 hours and then returning to normal activities. I’ve completed your paperwork, so when the nurse comes back in, you’ll be free to go.”

The second he said baby, I stopped breathing. When the sounds of the ER switch from beeping noises to the blood whooshing in my ears, I gasp down a gulp of air.Breathe. I’m not passing out again. A baby?I scoot up and try to work my mouth.

“You’re pregnant.” Ann taps the toe of her shoe on the floor. “You’re pregnant and didn’t tell me?”

The doctor’s eyes widen as color fills his cheeks and rushes up to the tips of his ears. “I’m so sorry, Ma’am. I should have asked your guest to step out of the room.”

“No.” I shake my head. “It’s fine. I was told it would be difficult to conceive without medical intervention, so I….”I’m pregnant. Oh. My. God.Giddiness starts at my core and zaps outward in all directions.

Everything that was shitty for the last day is wiped out instantly. I rest my hand on my belly.A baby. Leo’s baby. Our baby. Oh, my God. This is… Fucking awesome.

“I’m sorry. I’m overwhelmed. Wow.” My heart flutters in my chest, and then everything crashes. “Are you sure you have the right person?”

The doctor chuckles. “Well, I might have forgotten my training and spoke out of turn, but unless one of the nurses peed in a cup and got it mixed up, then, you’re–”

“Ask them.”

The doctor frowns. “Ask who, what?”

“Go ask the nurses if someone else peed in the cup.” I wave my hand toward the nurses’ station.

He laughs and clutches his gut. “I was kidding. There’s no chance it was anyone else. I promise.” His eyes twinkle with merriment. “We confirmed you as pregnant through urine and blood samples.”

I straighten my shoulders. “Do it again.”

“Do what again?”

“Do another pregnancy test.”

“It’s not necessary.”

“It’s necessary.” I swing my head toward Ann. “Get out $200 and hand it to him if the problem is that the insurance won’t pay for it.”

“Got it.” Ann jerks open her purse and hauls out her wallet.

“Lord.” He shakes his head. “It’s on me.”
