I look down. How is he missing this? “No sexy time tonight, big boy.” I point to the huge puddle on the floor.
“Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. What is that?”
“My water just broke. You need to call the doctor,” I tell him calmly before he starts to freak out. I’m not having contractions, but with twins, everything is taken more seriously and I’m considered a higher risk.
He stands there, staring at me in shock.
“Declan,” I snap, waking him out of his useless head.
“Sorry, what do I do?”
“Penny won’t be back for a few hours. You need to call Sadie and ask her to come to get Maeve and Bacon. Then call the doctor and midwife to tell them we’re on the way to the hospital. Then drive me to the hospital.”
“Okay, okay. I can do that.” He runs in a circle, then gets his bearings and grabs his phone.
For feck’s sake, we’re never going to make it.
Declan
“You got this, angel. One more push,” I whisper and kiss her forehead.
Her helpless eyes search mine, and I nearly break. “I can’t push anymore, Dec. Help me, please.”
This is pure torture.
We’re never having any more babies.
I can’t stand the thought of her in pain like this ever again.
She cries out, and I swear it’s louder than the last one.
Feck.
“One more push, Nora, and then Baby B will join us,” the doctor calls.
Her scared eyes glance over to me again, begging me for help. I’m useless.
God, why can’t I do this for her?
She shakes her head. She doesn’t want to push.
I bend down so we’re at eye level, cup her cheek and wipe the perspiration dripping down her face.
“One more, that’s it. I know you can do this.” I kiss her lips. “One more, and we meet our babies, angel.”
She squeezes my hand, and her face turns bright red as she pushes one last hard push, and the baby slides out, cries filling the room.
She drops her head on my shoulder, completely exhausted. I wrap my arms around her as we look up at the doctor.
“It’s a girl,” the doctor announces. “Two baby girls.”
I look down at my love. I thought I couldn’t love this woman anymore, but somehow, I just found a way.
“Girls,” I whisper.
Nora giggles. “Two baby girls.” She smiles, tears running down her face.
The nurse walks over and lays one on the right side of Nora’s chest, as she goes to lay the other one on her left side, Nora shakes her head.
