Marco is a completely different story. He’s eating up the attention like candy, living his best life.
“I’m having so much fun!” I yell over the music to Sadie, and she laughs in return.
“Me too! I’m hoping all this dancing makes this baby girl come out sooner rather than later.”
I smile down at her tummy. She’s all belly. You wouldn’t even know she was pregnant from the back. I hope I look half as good as she does whenever I get pregnant.
“Why are you staring at my stomach with a dreamy expression on your face?”
I shrug my shoulders and can’t help the smirk that crosses my face.
“If you weren’t drinking, I would have thought you were pregnant.”
“I wish…” Oh god, why did my drunk mouth say that?
“You want to be pregnant, now?!” Sadie shrieks so loud, you can hear it over the music that people turn to look at us.
We continue to sway to the music as we talk. “I mean, Declan’s it for me, right? You know our story. It’s never going to be anyone else, so why wait? I want a huge family.”
“How huge?” Her eyes bug out, and I can’t hold back my laughter. I chug the rest of my champagne and hand it to the passing waitress.
“I don’t know, six or so kids?” I shrug, embarrassed all of a sudden.
“You want six or so kids?!” she screams. “To be pushed out of your vagina?” She shrieks again.
“Shh! Can you not shout about my vagina to the whole club?” She puts her hand over her mouth, eyes still wide in surprise.
“I’ve always wanted a big family. Since I was a kid, I would tell Declan at least six kids. Although now, it’s partly because I’ll have the comfort that no one will ever be alone again. Having a large family ensures Declan, myself, and our children that they will have someone they can count on, god forbid anything were to happen to any of us.” Sadie’s face falls, and she clenches her jaw tight, so her tears don’t fall.
It’s the truth, though. I never want my children to feel as I did. It wasn’t fair to put my loneliness on Agnes, so I hid my emotions from her often.
Sadie starts to cry. Shite.
“My drunk mouth ruined the moment. I’m sorry, Sadie, I’m having so much fun. Let’s dance, Okay?” I grab her hands to get her to start moving again, she’s trying her hardest not to let her emotions get the better of her.
She takes a deep breath calming herself, then leans down to speak in my ear. “Nora, you’re not and will never be alone again. You have us for life too. Not just Declan.”
I smile warmly, and nowI’mtrying to keep my emotions at bay, but when I look around and realize we are still in the middle of the dance floor, I snap out of it.
“Okay, this is crazy. More dancing, less crying.” We both laugh, the moment passing.
Geez, way to make a good first impression Nora.
Evelyn and Marco make their way over to us, and the four of us dance for another few songs. I’m having the best time, like I’ve known them forever.
“Where’s Annabelle?” I ask everyone.
Sadie shrugs. “Either flirting or working.”
“Working? It’s midnight.”
“She’s in public relations, and many of her clients come here. It’s a perfect place for her to get on their good side.”
Hmm. That makes sense.
I look over to where the guys are standing, deep in conversation with some famous football players that just showed up. I guess in sports, it’s like one big happy family, and they all know each other. Or is it because they own this club? Who knows.
“We have two of the hottest guys here.” Sadie bumps my shoulder with hers and has what I can only assume is the same dreamy expression I have on my face.
