“Turn your eyes the other way, Peters,” Declan says and possessively puts his arm around me.
Wills chokes on his scotch and tries to suppress a laugh.
“Don’t,” Declan warns.
I look between the three of them. “What’s going on?”
“For years, Declan has been on my case about Sadie. So I’m glad it’s finally time to repay the torment.” Wills says, and Declan mumbles, annoyed.
“What about me?” Sadie asks as she walks down the stairs with Charlie and a beautiful golden dog.
“Uncle Dec!” Charlie runs toward him in the cutestLittle Mermaidnightgown. The dog runs next to her, not leaving her side.
“Why aren’t you in bed, Charlie?”
“Because I want to go dancing,” she sings, shaking her little hips in Declan’s arms, and we all laugh. She’s adorable.
“Don’t worry, love, me and you will go dancing when you get older,” Annabelle says as she enters the room with a glass of champagne for me.
“Over my dead body,” Wills mutters.
I’m fascinated with Wills’s and Annabelle’s interactions. Do they want to kill each other or not?
“They love each other, I promise,” Sadie says, reading my mind, then kisses me hello.
“You have to tell us one embarrassing thing about Declan as a kid. It’s like a rite of passage or something. He’s so quiet and keeps to himself. We need something against him,” Jackson says.
“Oh, yes, darling, please?” Annabelle begs.
“Let’s keep it PG,” Sadie looks down at Charlie.
“Let’s just not say anything at all,” Declan murmurs.
Hmmm, what could I tell him?
Oh! I know.
I take out my phone and go to the album with the old pictures and videos I scanned in a while back. Then pass my phone over to Jackson and Wills.
Jackson presses play, and his eyes nearly fall out of his head. He bursts out laughing. He can’t even get the words out. Tears are streaming down his face.
“Holy fucking shit.” Wills bends over and can’t control his laughter either. He grabs onto the counter to hold himself up.
“Daddy! Bad word.”
“Sorry.” He chokes on his drink.
I start laughing with them because I can envision the video. It’s ingrained in my memory.
Declan grabs the phone from Wills. Sadie and Annabelle look over his shoulder, and now the whole place is dying of laughter.
His eyes snap to me. “You’re in big fecking trouble, Pip.”
I shrug. “It was worth it.”
I take back my phone and play it again.
Delcan is fuming, but with Charlie in his arms, he can’t do anything.
