“Is he not happy about us?”
“It’s not that, Pip. He doesn’t like surprises, trust me, he will be ecstatic about us when we explain.”
Hmm, I’m not so sure about that.
Finally, we all take our seats, and Wills sits directly across from me. I know it’s strategic.
“Charlie, come sit in this seat between Auntie Belle and me,” Sadie says.
“No,” she snaps and puts her hands on her hips.
“Charlotte,” Wills reprimands.
“But… but…” Her little lip quivers. “I wanted to sit with you, Daddy.” Wills looks at Sadie, and she shakes her head furiously, by the look on his face,I can tell Wills is about to give in.
The guy might give off arsehole vibes, but he is infatuated with his daughter.
He pauses again, and the table goes quiet, waiting to see what he does, and not a second later, he folds.
“Okay, princess, come here,” he says, moving over a seat to make room.
“On your lap, Daddy?” She bats her lashes. Oh, she’s good because Wills doesn’t even miss a beat and puts his arms out right away.
“I wove you,” she whispers from the crook of his arm.
“I love you too, Charlotte,” Wills says and squeezes her tight.
“I don’t care how much you love each other. You’re both in big trouble,” Sadie says while giving Wills the eye. He must give in to Charlie often if she’s this upset about it.
He smiles over at her, and with Charlie still in his lap, he moves back over a seat and pulls Sadie into them, kissing her full on the lips.
“Don’t be mad, my beautiful girl.” He gives her a private smile and then cups her cheek and kisses her once more while Sadie melts right into him.
Whoa, I need to fan myself off.
“All right, all right. Enough with the lovey-dovey crap,” Jackson says, clearly uncomfortable seeing his sister intimate with Wills.
“Sorry.” Sadie cringes, embarrassed, while Wills shrugs as if he couldn’t care less. He turns his head back and when his eyes meet mine again, his mask is back in place. Sadie’s eyes bounce between us, looking confused.
He doesn’t intimidate me.
“How far along are you?” I ask Sadie.
“I’m past due.” She smiles. “I could go any day now. I was two weeks late with Charlie, so who knows.”
“So exciting, congratulations. You look amazing. Do you know what you’re having?”
She looks at Wills, and he smiles back at her. You can tell they adore each other very much.
“We are expecting a baby girl.”
I smile and turn my attention to Charlie. “Are you excited to be a big sister?”
She shrugs her shoulders but doesn’t answer.
“Charlie may have a slight issue not being the center of everyone’s attention anymore. It’s not just Wills and me, either. Her grandparents, aunts, and uncles dote on Charlie like the princess she and her dad truly think she is.” She smirks and looks at everyone at the table.
The waitress interrupts the moment to take our order, and when she’s gone, the table is suddenly quiet.
