Stepping through the door of Commander Cirlee’s office, Jett stopped and waited for the other alpha to get settled and tell him what the assignment was.
“We have a doctor flying in today to look for volunteers for a research project. She’s going to be here for a week or two, and I want you to stick with her and make sure no one tries anything dumb.”
Jett’s brows rose. It seemed odd to have him on bodyguard duty for a doctor.
“What’s she researching?”
His boss tapped on his keyboard for a moment before answering.
“Seems she’s trying to find evidence that alphas aren’t as dangerous as the politicians would like everyone to be. She’ll be running tests and whatever else that takes. You’re not squeamish, are you?”
Commander Cirlee leveled a stare at Jett that said he’d better not be.
“No, Sir. I’ve seen my share of blood.”
The Commander nodded before turning his attention back to the computer.
“Doctor Alosbee will be arriving later this morning. She’s made arrangements to stay at the hotel and use facilities at the hospital. She mentioned having some supplies she’ll need transported there. I expect you to be with her any time she’s at the hospital dealing with the local alphas.”
Jett frowned. If the doctor was only taking volunteers and was working toward helping revoke the mandates, it didn’t seem like she’d need a bodyguard, and he said as much to Commander Cirlee.
“Yes, but our good doctor happens to be an omega. Considering she’s unmated and will be dealing with unmated alphas all day, and handling their blood, it’s better to be on the cautious side. Could you imagine the setback if something happened to the one person trying to prove whether alphas are dangerous or not?”
Eyes widening, Jett sucked in a breath before nodding. They took protecting the omegas of Eden seriously, and with how many alphas wanted in, there were no second chances for misconduct, but being sure nothing happened to the doctor was more important than anything else. She could hold the key to alpha’s freedom everywhere.
“I understand.”
His chest filled with pride that the Commander was trusting the assignment to him, but a small part of him cringed, imagining the fallout if he failed. His future would be ruined right along with any chance of lifting the mandates should something happen.
“Good. Until she arrives, why don’t you finish that first aid course you’ve been putting off since you’ll be posted to the hospital for a while.”
Swallowing his groan, Jett straightened and saluted before leaving the office and making his way back to his desk. He dropped into the seat which creaked at the sudden burden of his weight, his partner’s gaze locking on him as he waited for an explanation.
Not sure how much he was allowed to share, Jett decided to keep the reason for the assignment to himself.
“I’m being appointed as a bodyguard to a new doctor flying in for the next week, so I’ll be stuck at the hospital.”
“Bodyguard? What kind of doctor is it, some bigwig who doesn’t trust alphas?”
Jett shrugged, not willing to say more, and leaned forward, waking his computer and logging in.
“Commander wants me to do that damn first aid training course while I wait.”
His partner laughed as he stood and grabbed his vest. They didn’t wear the masks that Controllers usually wore since they also doubled as the Force for Eden, and the Commander said it made them more approachable if people could see their faces. The vests were a necessity though, for their own protection. Quieter didn’t mean Eden was devoid of issues.
“Good luck with that. It was the most boring few hours of my life.”
Jett growled under his breath but there was no substance to it. Controllers were required to renew the course every couple years, and he’d done it enough times to be able to skip through most of the explanations and go straight to the questions.
“That’s cause you’re too stupid to remember the answers.”
Huffing, his partner flipped him off as he walked away, heading out for the patrol they usually did together. He wouldn’t have a problem doing it on his own while Jett was occupied.
At least guarding the doctor would be a change of pace. Jett hated to say it, but life in Eden had grown a bit boring after the initial excitement had worn off. Controllers were kept busy in the city, whether it was chasing down an alpha attempting to escape a Camp, or breaking up brawls at worksites, but for as long as he’d been in Eden, the worst that had happened was one fight that had ended in an injury that was more accidental than anything.
Sighing, he focused on the course as the other Controllers trickled out of the station. He was down to the last few questions when the signal that they had an incoming speeder sounded through the building. Rushing to get it finished and saved so he wouldn’t have to do it again, Jett barely made it to the roof as the speeder landed.
The woman who emerged was the last person he would have pictured as a doctor, though she was every wet dream of an omega. Long blonde hair stirred in the breeze atop the roof, her curves obvious from where he stood at the entrance to the building.
