Trying to hide her discomfort, Evelyn turned and picked up the blood samples, moving over to the counter as she dismissed him.

“That’s it for this part. Are you up for the MRI?”

When silence met her question, she was forced to look over her shoulder. The alpha stood in front of the chair, Jett just beyond him. She could see the tension in Jett’s posture, her own spine going stiff until the alpha finally shook his head and moved toward the door.

“Not now,” he muttered before disappearing through the opening.

Brow furrowing, she looked from Jett to the other alpha still waiting.

“Ignore him. He’s a baby when he gets his feelings hurt.”

The second alpha flashed her a grin with his words, taking his place on the seat. Shrugging out of his coat, he laid out his arm and raised his brows, waiting on her. She didn’t have time to second guess the director’s decision to have an omega do research on alphas.

10. Jett

He’d thought the alphas at the door were the men he’d asked for, but the first whiff of their unfamiliar scents had his instincts rushing forward to block them from reaching Evelyn. It had taken every bit of his control to swallow his growl and move aside so they could enter the room, and he almost lost it with the first alpha’s remark.

Once the two alphas left he felt a little bad about threatening to send him to another camp just for flirting with Evelyn. If he’d overheard the remark toward any other omega he would have watched to see if the omega was receptive and if the alpha accepted a rejection before stepping in, but he couldn’t allow it with her.

His reactions were worrying, even to him. He knew he was taking things too far, but he couldn’t stop. There was something about her that had hooked him and wouldn’t let him go.

“Is there anyone else waiting?”

The hope in her voice was a knife to the stomach. He could tell how disappointed she was that there wasn’t a steady line of alphas waiting, and he was almost as confused as her over how none seemed to want to help possibly free their dynamic.

“None that I see. I can go check the foyer?”

She tried to hide it with the smile on her face, but he saw the light in her eyes die.

Fist tightening around his phone, he waited for her nod before rushing out the door and dialing his commander as he strode to the main doors.

“Cirlee.”

Jett’s lips tipped up despite himself. His commander had the most fitting name, though he was much less dour when his mate was around.

“It’s Comanne. I hope I didn’t bother you at home.”

Officially the commander was off on the weekends to be with his family, but he usually found his way into the office at one point or another. The man was dedicated to his duty.

“I just left, heading to the office now. Is there a problem at the hospital?”

Jett knew the issue wasn’t exactly in the Controllers’ purview, but the commander had been the only person he knew would see the problem the way he did.

“Only that there’s no one here.”

There was a pause at the other end of the line, the other man’s breathing the only thing that let Jett know the phone hadn’t disconnected.

“No one has stopped by to leave samples? How long have you been there?”

“Just two, since seven thirty.”

He heard a grunt followed by rustling before the commander spoke again.

“Grab lunch now. You’ll be busy shortly.”

Warmth spread through his chest as he grinned. Commander Cirlee might not be able to order anyone to volunteer, but he could suggest they do so. Strongly.

“Thanks, Commander.”
