“For what?”

“Well, I thought it was strange that Kane had no issues with me sleeping in bonnets and changing my wigs, but I fell asleep last night and he even went to get it for me. I woke up with it on this morning, which seemed a little out of the norm for a guy who I recently started dating. Although, now that I met you, it seems to make more sense.”

Eve laughed, “It took mom a while to get used to doing my hair, and bonnets were the only thing that saved her sanity when I was little. I used to hate wearing them, so Kane would wear one too. It always made me laugh, and I’d give in at bedtime.”

The look Trinity gave me was one I’d never forget. “You never said anything.”

“Neither did you. I didn’t know you thought it was strange. If you told me, I would have told you about Eve.”

“Well, I love it,” she said as she leaned over to kiss me, only for Eve to laugh and wander away.

“You know, you act like you are so hard to impress, but I’m not even working overtime yet,” I said as I pulled her into my arms.

“Kane, your mother is watching us.”

“Yeah, she’s nosy. Ignore her.”

She laughed and pushed me away. “No way. I want her to like me.”

“Oh really? Why is that?”

“Because she’s your mom, of course. Why wouldn’t I want her to like me?”

“Maybe because when we started this chaos a couple of days ago, I could only convince you to date me until after this weekend. Have things changed?”

Trinity tried to look away from me, but I caught her chin, pulling her gaze back to me. “Answer me, Trin. Are you willing to give this a go?”

“I… I don’t know. Let’s not talk about this here, though.”

I nodded and let her pull away from me. It killed me to give her space, but I didn’t want to scare her off. She beelined it for the kitchen and washed her hands, offering to help my mom put the final touches on dinner. I sat with my dad and watched her laughing with my mom and sisters. I couldn’t pull my eyes away from her.

“This is what it’s all about, you know,” my dad said, breaking his normal silence.

“What is?”

“This. Look around. There are kids shaking boxes under the Christmas tree, family and friends everywhere, new families on the brink of beginning and yet the only thing I can do is watch your mother and smile. Much in the same way you are watching Trinity. She’s special, Kane, don’t fuck this up.”

“I know, dad. But she’s got so many barriers up, I don’t know if I can get past them all.”

“You can, and you will.”

That was all he said to me. The total of his advice was that I could and I would win Trinity over. It wasn’t much, but it was what I needed to hear. I didn’t want a future without her, and I was starting to think she may feel the same way.

Chapter Ten

Trinity

Iwokeuptothe smell of bacon and French toast and when I opened my eyes, it wasn’t only breakfast in my view, but the most beautiful man I had ever seen. Kane Saint had weaseled his way into my heart in record time, and I had no idea what I was going to do about it. I smiled up at him as he placed a tray in front of me.

“Are we supposed to eat breakfast at my mom’s?”

“We are, but I called her and checked first. She said brunch isn’t until after church and I didn’t want you hungry.”

“So you cooked?”

“Well, don’t be too impressed. I microwaved bacon and had to call my sister Noelle on FaceTime to talk me through the French toast.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. “You really are a special kind of human, Kane Saint.”
