I couldn’t help laughing aloud. “I never go against my word.”

Sure. Fear and anger knotted up, freezing my insides. But the chill melted in the protection of his arms.

If only the past hadn’t taught me a lesson I could never forget.

Chapter 10

Rex

I slipped closer to Jolene, wrapping my arms more tightly around her, encouraging her to have her way with me.

“Don’t you need to hang on to the reins?” she asked, stiffening slightly in alarm.

“Are you kidding me? That mare is so well trained she practically rides herself.”

“Yeah right,” she said uneasily.

For a moment, I stared wordlessly at her, then placed my hand over my heart. “Don’t you believe me?”

She smirked with a slight smile of defiance. “Prove it.”

“Okay, but first let me ask you something,” I said.

She looked at me expectantly, and I plunged on. “Let me give you an early Christmas present.”

Jolene hesitated, blinking with bafflement.

I continued, responding to her unstated question. “How long has it been since you’ve allowed a man to give you pleasure?” Saying the words aloud made my cock punch my zipper.

She muttered uneasily, “I can’t see how that’s any of your business.”

On cue, the mare snorted her agreement, bobbing her head up and down as she kicked into a jog.

“As I said, I’ll go as slow as you need. But make no mistake…” I slid my hand gradually downwards, so she’d have time to protest if she felt like it. Hearing none, I landed just above the spot where I fantasized she’d be wet and dripping with arousal when she finally let me have my way with her. “I want to make you feel so good.” An insatiable hunger consumed me as I spoke. “And then I’d like to make it sting a little.” I moved my other hand beneath her buttocks. “Right here. Because I think you’ll like it. More than anything, I’d love you to be my girl and call me Daddy. It would be a better present than anything ever left under the tree.”

She panted visibly, staring at me with what I hoped was longing.

“Can I take that as a yes?” I asked her.

“I already told you I like you, too, Rex. I’m just afraid.” Her honesty astounded me.

Without thinking, the words from Deuteronomy popped out of my mouth. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified… for the Lord your God goes with you.”

The sun set low behind the mountains, and it was time I took her home, no matter how much I wanted to get under her clothes right here in the middle of the fields. Our first time should be special.

While Jolene mustered the courage to explore her feelings for me, I planned on taking her back to an empty house and giving her the nudge she needed.

We bed Josie down for the evening with a scoop of oats, a flake of alfalfa, and fresh water, and stood there in the barn for a while, enjoying the sound of her munching hay. The barn’s inhabitants were better equipped to survive the cold than we were with their fur, wool, or feathers. “Thank you for helping me feed the animals,” I told Jolene, breaking the contemplative silence between us.

“I’d love to do something more. Something to repay you and your mother for your kindness in letting me stay here during the storm,” she said.

I caught her chin in my hand and looked down into her eyes, my steady gaze boring into her in silent invitation, leaning towards her as I spoke. “There are a few things you could do to pay me back, and they don’t involve clothes.”

There wasn’t time enough for her to protest my crushing her to me and pressing my mouth to hers.

She made a small noise in her throat, and I couldn’t determine if it was acquiescence or protest. She gulped and said, “Will you just hold my hand?” Extending her smaller palm; mine came down to wrap around hers possessively. Any man could lust after a woman the way I did for her. More than that, I was called to help repair her wounds, to mend her hurts with kindness and grace.

But that didn’t mean I’d stopped wanting to plow her like a field.
