“And what will you do if I give you the piece?”
His face brightened. “I’d give power back to the shifters. Bring more of them to this land and restore our rightful powers—”
Blue lights flashed in the tiny basement window. The police were here. Probably not for me, but I was about to make myself a problem.
I screamed as loud as I could.
Chapter
Twenty-Nine
Gabe
We’d almost made it to Wanda’s house when the police caught up to us.
Bjorn groaned from the driver’s seat. “What do I say to him? I’ve got a broken windshield, two shifted animals, and Hugo’s blood is everywhere.”
“Tell them the truth,”Bibi said. “Wendy’s been abducted, Hugo was attacked, and we have reason to believe Wanda is involved. If I could, I’d shift back and work my magic on them. That catsuit would have done the trick.”
The officer approached. “You’re the guy with the camera, right?”
“Oh, thank the moon, he’s a fan,”Bibi said.
The officer peeked into the van and backed away a step when he saw Bibi and me.
Bjorn barely had a chance to answer when Wanda came running out of her house. “Thank goodness you’re here.”
But she wasn’t talking about us. She’d pulled the officer away from the truck, and I couldn’t hear what she was saying, but she waved her arms widely, pointing toward her house.
“Oh this is ridiculous,”I said.Tasking Bjorn with handling the police and Wendy’s crazy, shifter-hating sister was way too much. I might not have dealt with Wanda personally for years, but I’d listened to all the stories. I knew what made this woman tick.
“Gabriel, what are you doing? What if we need to fight?”Bibi cried.
“I’ll shift back.”My body protested, going back to human so soon, but I’d deal with it once Wendy was safe and in my arms. I’d never let her go again.“Are there still sweats in the back?”
“There are always sweats in the back for situations exactly like these.”She sighed.
Wanda gasped when I jumped out of the passenger’s side of the van.
“Oh, wow. You’re Gabe Wylde. I was a big fan. Sorry to see you leave snowboarding,” the officer said.
I nodded to him. We’d have time for autographs and selfies once we found my mate.
“Where is my sister?” Wanda pointed at me, and then motioned at the officer, wide-eyed. “This…shifter…is the one who lured her out of Woodhead Family Realty a few weeks ago, on amotorcycle, and she hasn’t been home since. You need to talk to him.”
“I was hoping you could answer that question.” It took everything I had to remain calm. I might never see Wendy again.
No, I couldn’t think like that.
She couldn’t be far away, yet. There were a lot of shifters with big mouths around here.
I’d find her, and make whoever had the balls to take her pay.
“Wait.” Wanda’s brow furrowed. “You don’t know where Wendy is?”
“She was taken from the Orchid Lounge. About a half hour ago. They attacked our head of security, too.”
Wanda made a big show of gasping, but I wasn’t buying it.
