But there had to be a lot of them.
“Hugo’s not answering.” Bibi flipped her phone closed. “For my sanity, I’ll assume that means he’s kicking shifter ass.”
“Where’s the back door?” I asked.
Blaire guided me down the hall. There were no other signs of force inside the building. But the windshield ofThe Mating Gamevan had been smashed, and Hugo was nowhere in sight.
“Those are some mean burned rubber marks,” Blaire said. “I used to drive racecars. Someone went from zero to eighty before they left this parking lot.”
“Call Austin now. Get the Colorado Ranch shifters here.” Bibi pulled off her wig. “We need a plan.”
I agreed, but I couldn’t answer because I was already mid-shift.
Austin Connors had a military background, and he knew a thing or two about fighting.
“I don’t know where they’re going,” Blaire said into the phone. She looked at us, both in our animal form, frustration clear on her face. “Bibi and Gabe have shifted. Will you be able to understand them if I put the phone up to their faces?”
She shrugged and put the phone on speaker.
“Bibi, can you hear me?” Austin called out.
“Loud and clear. Pretty sure the wolves behind Ranchero Hills have Wendy. Hugo’s either fighting them or he’s on their tail. He’s not answering his phone. Can you find out where Derek Jared is living while he’s in Sunset Springs? Head there. If he doesn’t have Wendy, he knows who does.”
“I’ll stay on the line until you find the address, babe,” Blaire said.
“He’s filed a lawsuit to overturn the work stoppage. The address should be on that.” Austin paused, and all of us in the parking lot hung on every click of that keyboard. “Damn. Looks like it was filed under a corporate address. I can keep looking—”
“Later. Right now, we need you to fight. Does anyone know Wanda’s address off the top of their head?”
“She’s next door to Wendy. 3037 Sunset Lane.”
“Think we can still drive the van?” Bjorn asked.
“The windshield’s pretty messed up, but I think I’d be able to drive it,” Blaire said. “I’ll put my head out the window if I have to.”
“I don’t care if we have to bash the whole thing out,” I growled.
Bibi’s instincts were straight on. Wanda would be a pain in the ass to deal with, but something told me when push came to shove, she wouldn’t be loyal to Derek Jared over her own sister.
“I’ll let the rest of the pack know Wendy’s in trouble. We’ll be there ASAP,” Austin said.
“Let the Woodland Pack pride know too. Gabriel’s already shifted,” Bibi added before he hung up.
I had no idea if my pride would answer the call to fight for my mate, and that was a big fucking problem.
Blaire opened the driver’s side door and screamed.
Hugo was in there in his human form. His body was wedged between the two front seats, and from the size of that gash, I was pretty sure they’d used his head to bash the windshield.
Bibi gasped. She tried like hell to keep the wolf at arm’s length but there was no denying there was something more than a professional relationship between them. She bound into the van, giving him a sniff and a nudge with her snout.
“Hugo. Wake up.”Even in her wolf form, her voice shook. It was a bad sign that he hadn’t shifted at the first hint of danger. She looked back at us.“He’s breathing. Barely.”
“I’m calling Austin back. Telling him to call his mom. She’s the pack healer.” Blaire had the phone on her ear. “Hugo’s Green Mountain pack. They have a powerful healer too. He’s not answering. I’ll call Jenny directly. But we need to get him to her.”
“Do you have your car?” Marissa asked.
Blaire nodded.
