“Fuck,” I growled.
“My sentiments exactly.” She sighed. “The last thing I want to do is go out there and find out what’s going on, but something tells me it’s better if we find them before they find us.”
“You’re right.” My cock screamed at me when I pushed myself off the bed. Wendy hastily reached for her clothes, threw her tank top on, and put her camp shirt over it without bothering to button it. I handed her the pants, not missing how much her body was shaking as she got dressed.
“Hey.” I grasped her shoulders. Touching her was dangerous, because all I wanted to do was drive my cock deep inside her. “Just because there are wolves out there doesn’t mean they’recoming for us. There’s not usually a camp down here. Don’t think this is anyone’s land, currently—”
“Those ancient spirits might be lighting up the alert system, like Lars said they would.” Her body tensed. “Maybe some of them aren’t so ancient after all.”
“Let’s go deal with this, because this night won’t end without—”
Another howl, this one closer. Wendy’s eyes widened and my animal went into overdrive.
I stalked out of the tent, ripping my shirt at the seams. It would be moments before I shifted.
Wendy screamed when she saw a wolf.
“It’s me. Hugo.”
“She can’t understand you.” But I didn’t have a chance to tell her what was happening because my bones cracked. Fur burst through my skin. Claws emerged from my fingertips.
“I don’t know what to do.” She clapped her hand over her mouth and backed away.
“It’s okay.” Marissa emerged from her tent. I would’ve been able to relax if Bibi, Bjorn, or Lars followed her, but she appeared to be alone. “This wolf is Hugo. He stayed here to protect the camp.”
“Where are the rest of them?” Wendy asked.
Marissa shrugged. “Bibi and I were getting ready for bed, talking, and suddenly she got real still. Went outside and didn’t come back. By the time I checked on her, she was a wolf. Bjorn rumbled out of his tent, already a bear.” She leaned toward Wendy and lowered her voice. “Lars shifted too, but I still have no idea what he is.”
That was the least of our fucking worries right now.
“I’m staying here to guard the camp,” Hugo said.
“Where did they go?” I could hardly stay still, prowling back and forth.
“Don’t know. Bibi said she could feel them, whatever that meant.”
“I might know where they are,” I said.
“So you’re gonna go off on your own, with no idea who you’re fighting and no backup? For what?”Hugo huffed.“It could be nothing. They’re doing a sweep.”
“That’s not what you said before.”
“You have more than your pride to think about,”Hugo warned.“You have a mate. And you’re finally getting a chance to make things right.”

Twenty-Three
Bibi
“How long are we going to climb this mountain before you admit it’s nothing?”Lars asked.
His long strides and giant hands made navigating the hill look easy. He hadn’t come forward with what kind of animal he was, but in his shifter form, he stayed upright, his facial features stayed mostly the same, but he was a lot furrier.
“It wasn’t nothing. Those ancient spirits you seem so fond of were whispering in my ear.”
“What did they tell you about the human?”
