Big Life Change

“Hi,” Jasmine said, knocking on the hospital room door. “Can I come in for a visit?”

“Of course you can,” Lily said. She was sitting on the bed, her newborn son in a little bassinet next to her, sleeping. “You brought me flowers.”

“Crazy, I know, but I couldn’t help myself.” She looked around the room and saw balloons and teddy bears, one vase of roses that she knew came from Zane. She’d had them ready for him to pick up this morning in the greenhouse before he left.

“I love my flowers.”

“How are Mom and baby Ryder doing?” she asked, walking over to look at the sleeping child. He had a little blue knit hat on his head so she had no idea if there was hair under it or how dark it might be.

“We are both well. Tired, but we’ll have time to sleep.”

She’d gotten the call that Ryder Zane Wolfe was born a little past eight last night weighing just over nine pounds. Lily had been having contractions in the morning at work; she’d seen it and cornered her on it.

Her boss said she was holding off to the last minute to tell Zane to not worry him, but with some prodding and help from Rose, they’d made Lily call Zane and get to the hospital. Thankfully, Poppy was at the plant or she would have been hard to manage.

Ten hours later, baby Wolfe was born. Jasmine loved how she got the call fairly fast to be told the news.

“I hope you get time to sleep,” she said. “And you better rest.”

“I will,” Lily said. “Liz is ready to come give me a chance to recover. She was here until they kicked her out last night. Rose and Thomas took Willow home and Liz was going to bring her back this morning.”

Zane’s mother was in and out of the shop at times visiting or picking up Willow. She was positive Lily wouldn’t overdo it between her in-laws and her sisters.

She often wondered how it’d be when her time came. It would depend on who she ended up with because it’s not like she had family around her.

Correction, she was going to have Ivy with her in less than two weeks.

Her sister had left just over two weeks ago, talked to their grandparents and been told they thought it was a great idea.

Her grandmother called to talk to her and make sure that Ivy didn’t pressure her into this. She’d said her younger sister hadn’t, but Ivy had filled her grandparents in on Jasmine having a boyfriend.

Most of the call was spent talking about Wesley and then some more on Ivy and getting her here.

She was leaving most of that up to her sister, but the weekend of Labor Day, she’d have a roommate.

Probably not the best weekend to be traveling, but Ivy had to figure this out herself.

“I’m sure Willow is super excited to have a baby in the house.”

“She is. She can’t wait to help out either. Zane missed all of this with Willow since he was in the service when she was born. He says he’s looking forward to it.”

She knew the story there. That Zane’s ex gave birth while he was stationed overseas, but then dropped Willow off at Liz and Tony Wolfe’s saying she needed a break and never returned until two years ago when she came looking for money.

“You’ve got a keeper there,” she said.

“Come sit and visit,” Lily said. “I hear you’ve got a big life change coming up too. Or a change in your living situation.”

“I do,” she said. “It didn’t take Ivy long to make her decision. She put in a month’s notice at her job and started to pack up. We’ve never had a lot of things so she is lucky enough to get it all in her car. I had the bed already in the spare room and she didn’t have one, so she’s not bringing much more than clothes.”

“I’m not sure I could live with either of my sisters at this point in my life,” Lily said, laughing.

“You could Rose. Anyone could with Rose. She keeps to herself. Poppy might be hard.”

Lily grinned. “More so because she’s emotional with this pregnancy. I breezed through it, but Poppy is having some rough mornings which is making matters worse.”

“That’s too bad,” she said. “But she’s so happy. You can see that.”
