Now she worried he was getting excited and it could be a false alarm, but there was part of her that was pretty sure it wasn’t.
She knew her body. She knew something was going on in there now that wasn’t like when she’d normally gotten her period.
“Then I’ll start dinner. We are having shrimp and that cream sauce over spaghetti.”
“Can you eat shrimp?” he asked. “If you are pregnant, isn’t there something about not eating fish?”
“How do you know that?” She picked her phone up to look the information up and found it was safe to eat if it was cooked.
“I don’t know. I read it somewhere or heard it. Maybe Noelle’s sister said it once. I don’t know.”
But he would have paid attention because it was something he’d planned on going through in his life and he wanted to make sure everything was perfect.
He said he was letting her control things, but he liked to do the same. She’d always known that and had to keep that in her mind too. He’d be an active parent and they could step on each other’s toes.
When her phone went off, she looked at him and said, “Here we go.”
“Let’s look together,” he said.
Why she was worried about his reaction was beyond her and even though they hadn’t been dating long, there was this excitement inside of her that wanted it to be positive.
Explanations to her family would come at a later time. What she’d say and disappointment from her parents would be dealt with.
He grabbed the stick before her and lifted it up, but his hand covered the results.
“What are you doing?” she said.
“I want us to look at it together,” he said.
How could anyone be so perfect was all she could think of.
“Okay,” she said. “Here goes.”
He moved his hand and they read the word “pregnant.” She took a step into the bathroom and sat down and put her head between her knees.
“Are you okay?” he asked. “I thought you seemed happy about it.”
She looked up and there were tears in her eyes. Maybe one in his too. “Yeah. I’m okay with it. It’s just I was flooded with the thought there is this living thing inside of me.”
“There is,” he said, picking her up and hugging her, then spinning her in the bathroom. “I put it there.”
“You did,” she said. “I guess I know how you feel about it.”
“Move in with me.”
“What?” she said.
“Move in. I’m going to be there for you. I’m going to help you raise this child that we created together. Move in now so I can help you.”
“Whoa. Slow down. I’m excited and happy, but that is really fast. I’m not sure I want anyone to know yet. I haven’t been to the doctor. I want to get that all verified. I can only guess when I’m due based on looking it up online.” Not only that, just last week they were saying they were both happy with the pace they had.
Well, he’d worried he might be moving fast and she’d told him she liked where they were. To her that meant not going faster though.
“When?” he asked.
“Early May. I’m not positive the exact date of my last period, but I know it was the end of July or the beginning of August.”
“Okay,” he said. “Wow. One year of marina ownership and I’m going to be a dad too. Damn.”
