I frowned, not appreciating her implication. “We aren’t just dating. We’re having a baby together.”
“Well, if you think this is bad, just wait until they find out about the baby,” Val said.
Harper’s eyes widened, and I sensed her fear. I knew how she’d struggled to get pregnant. And just how badly she wanted this baby. And after what had happened with my dad, I wasn’t taking any chances. I’d do anything to keep Harper and our child safe.
“Uccellina,” I said, hoping to calm her. “Most people online are harmless, they’re just venting their frustration. It happens every time I miss a shot or my team loses a game.”
“Yeah, but unlike you, I didn’t ask for this life.”
“Unfortunately, it comes with the territory,” I said. “Look, I know security might seem like overkill, but—”
She shook her head. “No. It’s fine. You’re right.”
I kissed her temple, surprised but grateful all the same. “I will do anything to protect you.” I love you.
I just hoped it wouldn’t be too much for her—this life that she hadn’t wanted.

The restof Mamma and Val’s visit was uneventful, and they soon returned home. But not without attending one of my games first. I was glad to have that out of the way and pleased that Mammaand Harper had gotten along so well. I knew Val still had her reservations, but she seemed to have come around as well.
Harper wasn’t thrilled about her new security, even if she didn’t say it. And there were a number of details we had yet to sort out, namely the house. But Alexis and I had been working on that.
“Thank you for coming with me today,” Harper said from the exam table in the doctor’s office.
Nico had helped us sneak in, arranging everything so we’d go straight to the exam room instead of waiting in the common area.
“Of course.” I held her hand in mine, grateful that she allowed it. I was both nervous and excited about this appointment.
There was a knock at the door, and a silver-haired woman in scrubs peeked her head in. “Harper.” The nurse smiled, then turned to me. She was speechless a moment before she collected herself and said, “And you must be the father.”
I nodded. “I am.”
Sylvia introduced herself and then asked Harper some questions. I figured it was fairly routine, but I listened intently.
“You’ve had some headaches lately,” I chimed in.
“I think it’s just from stress. I’ve been tired.”
“Still.” The nurse smiled. “It’s always good to tell the doctor about any new symptoms. We’ll do the exam and then the sonogram. You know the drill. Please disrobe from the waist down and cover yourself with the sheet.”
Harper nodded and said, “Thanks, Sylvia,” as the nurse closed the door behind her.
“Hey.” I tangled my hands in Harper’s hair. “I missed you this morning.”
She smiled. “I missed you too. I’m glad you were able to get your coach to approve this.”
I gripped her chin. “Of course, uccellina. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” And then I gave her a quick peck. “Shouldn’t you get changed?”
She lifted a shoulder. “Yeah. Probably. Though sometimes I have to wait a little while for Dr. Fulton.”
“Mm.” I placed my hands on the exam table, the paper crinkling as I bracketed her with my arms. “Is that so?”
I didn’t wait for her answer, kissing her instead. I’d seen her eight hours ago, but it felt like forever. I caressed her lips with mine, coaxing her to open for me. To let me in. And when she did, I explored her as if it was the first time.
I slid my hand up her ribs to her breasts, squeezing and making her moan. She was rocking into me, so I peeled her jeans down, the elastic waistband making for easy access.
“Enzo.” She swallowed, though her eyes were wild with lust and excitement. “What are you doing?”
