"What is that voice?" I whispered as my muscles froze and I stood up, still naked, listening intently.
Cyburn sat up too. He climbed out of bed. He touched the top of his head and groaned. His eyes squeezed shut with worry and concentration.
My heart hammered nervously. I gripped his arm. "Cyburn… are you okay?"
"I'm fine," he reassured. He planted a kiss to the top of my head. "Just a bit dizzy, from standing up too fast, that's all."
I was relieved. "That happens to me sometimes too."
I didn't know if it still had something to do with the residual effects of his temporary paralysis, but I was hoping that he was enough on the mend to get back to fighting for our lives like he was so good at doing.
"I promise, I'm okay. I don't feel weak. If I was, I wouldn't have been able to—"
"Pound me like that?" I grinned. I knew it wasn't the time for joking around, but he had set it up so perfectly.
Cyburn laughed. "Yes, if that's what you want to call it."
"I didn't see anything wrong with your strength and stamina a few minutes ago," I admitted. It was hard for the naughty side of me to wear off. I was still feeling a bit frisky.
The voice cut through again and then it all disappeared. Up until now, it had been coming through in scratchy patches. Now, unfortunately, we could hear it as clear and plain as day.
"This is the Operator," the voice said.
"What does that mean?" I asked again.
Nix charged into the room. His eyes were wide with panic.
"This isn't good," Nix said, panting hard.
I screamed and reached for my clothes to cover myself up because I was still naked, and so was Cyburn.
"Oh…shit… I'mso sorry," Nix shouted, realizing his error, and quickly turning around. He covered his face with his hands.
"We don't have time to worry about that now," Cyburn said as he hastily started dressing himself in his life support armor again. "Since we didn't get a chance to disengage the Operator first, now it's going to do it for us… only it's going to takeusdown with it."
I glanced between the two. I felt wildly out of the loop. I hated being in the dark about this stuff. It made the anxiety and the fear even more pronounced. I got dressed too, still a little mortified, but Cyburn was right. We didn't have time to process the embarrassment of Nix seeing us naked.
"Who is the Operator?" I exclaimed again. I was getting frustrated that I wasn't getting answers.
Neither Cyburn nor Nix responded to me. They were scrambling around the room, shouting at each other, engaged in a full out panic.
"We have to get out of here," Nix said.
"There's no time." Cyburn shook his head with devastation as if all hope was lost.
I'd never seen him so terrified before. It more than unnerved me. I was crippled with a new onset of fear. I was seriously worried now that we weren't going to get out of this alive.
How could I be so naïve and foolish? Cyburn and I had taken our time to make love, but all that seemed so trivial and light years away from us now in the onset of pure terror.
The mystery voice continued lashing out robotic threats that chilled me to the bone.
Cyburn got on his communicator and started shouting instructions to the rest of the crew who was with us on the Belic ship, albeit on a different part of the ship and whom I still had yet to meet.
I had removed the communicator from Cyburn's helmet earlier while he was still laying on the cot, so that he could talk to Silver and the crew before we'd had sex.
He had been so calm and subdued then. Now he was so frantic that he could barely even keep the damned thing in his hands because he was shaking so badly.
"Get back to the hangar," he commanded. "Prepare to fly back to TheBladeto prepare for takeoff. The blowback from the explosion is going to quake and ripple through space for miles.
