My body was sore, my muscles ached. I had a stress headache from all the tension and the fear of the unknown.

It didn't matter. I had to keep going. For whatever reason, fate chosemeto be a part of this mission, and I wasn't going to screw it up. There was no room for error, but I had just made acriticalmistake of taking my attention off the killbot, even if it had only been for a split second.

Now, I was going to have to chase it down again. It moved faster than I'd expected, given its size.

I reached it again, and Nix distracted it while I concentrated on pulling out its wires. I was sweating bullets as I attempted to disengage the correct ones. I had some experience with robotic wires, so that was a plus, but half of it was still a guessing game. One wrong pull and I could accidentally blow a hole in this corridor.

I held my breath and yanked the red wire. It worked. I forced myself to breathe again. Once the killbot was deactivated, it froze in place. A hissing sound released from its mouth. It's hands and arms went limp by its side, and it stopped moving.

I was extremely proud of myself for doing this without killing us all, but I didn't have time to bask in victory.

"Cyburn needs us," Nix said and desperately tugged on my arm. "Come on."

We started jogging toward Cyburn. He was locked in a death battle with Jun. They were fighting each other hard.

The next sequence of events seemed to happen in slow motion. Cyburn ducked to miss a punch from Jun. When he did, he took a split second to remove his ray gun from his belt holster. He aimed and fired. The laser penetrated Jun's armor vest. It began to melt the vest, along with the metal underneath.

Jun let out a guttural shout that cannoned through the walls. His voice was animatronic. His movements were jerky. His body started hissing and popping. A few sparks flew out of the wounded area. His eyes were wide and startled, and he flailed his arms in the air. Then, he collapsed to the floor.

Then, before I knew what was happening, a weird, bright, white flash of light blasted through the corridor. It was blinding. I groaned and squeezed my eyes shut. It was like a gong went pulsating through my temples. My knees buckled but I didn't fall. I clutched the sides of my head and kept my eyes shut tight.

When I opened them again, the chaos had ended after what had seemed like both an eternity and only a brisk moment in time. It was eerily quiet. It was as if an invisible fog had suddenly been lifted from the area.

"He's gone," Nix said, panting hard.

His shoulders were slouched as he bent over, trying to catch his breath. He had a few rips and tears in his armor suit, but it was nothing a little patch work and stitching couldn't fix.

He was also bleeding a little from a small cut on the side of his cheek— but all three of us had managed to escape this grueling fight relatively unscathed.

"Who is gone… Jun?" I practically shrieked.

I glanced around to confirm that was what Nix was talking about and sure enough, Jun was nowhere to be found.

My heart sank. An enormous flood of dread washed over me. I thought that he had been mortally wounded after Cyburn had used his ray gun to shoot through Jun's chest armor. I hadseenthe laser melt directlythroughthe chest plate.

I had witnessed with my owneyesthe fact that Jun had crumbled to the floor like a balled up piece of paper. How thehelldid he manage to get away?

Nix nodded. His expression was extremely somber. "He got away with the last killbot."

It was as if someone had punched me in the stomach. I was devastated. Cyburn looked beside himself with defeat.

His eyes were wild and wide. The blackness in his eyes darkened the mystery of what just happened. I felt the furious energy of his wrath. It was powerful. He hated Jun. I knew it then and there— that he would stop at nothing to make sure he destroyed the diabolical robot man once and for all.

Cyburn turned around and slammed his fist into the wall of the corridor. The force was so intense that the mold of his knuckles left a dent in the steel.

I stood there, not knowing what to do, not knowing how to act. My body was tense and tight. I'd never seen Cyburn exhibit this kind of behavior before— at least not since meeting him.

"He managed to get away after he hit me with that temporary paralysis," Cyburn admitted as if it was all his fault.

"How did he do it?" I asked. I hated to admit it, but that kind of cybernetic technology was beyond anything I had ever seen before. "Was it that weird flash of light?"

I'd seen it happen, but everything had happened so fast after that— that it seemed like a blur.

"Yes, Cyburn confirmed. "It is the best weapon at his disposal," Cyburn said. "It doesn't kill an enemy, but it will disable them for long enough so that if you're wounded, you can get away."

"Which is exactly what he did," I said, feeling woeful.

"He had that killbot to carry him," Nix added.
