"Yes…" I trailed off apprehensively. "As long as we each hold our end of the bargain."
"I intend to."
"Do not send your robots to attack us when we are unarmed," I warned.
Jun chuckled sinisterly. His laughter was icy, and it made my bones quiver with a shiver of cold.
"A promise is a promise. We don'thaveto be enemies."
Yes, we do— because your kind destroyed the wellbeing and the quality of life of my kind. You infiltrated our home and took it from us completely— leaving us in total devastation. An enemy to you is anyone who doesn't play by your rules and does exactly what you want them to say and do.
Of course, I said none of this aloud. I just kept it all to myself. I shoved my resentment to the back of my mind and swallowed my pride, even though it nearly choked me to do so. Now wasn't the time to prove a point to him.
I had to follow my own advice— advice that I had given to Carmela just a few minutes ago. I had to pretend to be on board with this plan. If I didn't act the part, Jun was going to suspect something was amiss. If everything fell apart, I would have no one to blame but myself. There was still an entire crew of soldiers on this ship that I needed to protect.
"Then come out so we can start the parlay," I asked again, hoping that Jun wouldn't stall for much longer.
I took a deep breath and swallowed hard, hoping that this scheme wouldn't fall to pieces before it even had a chance to begin.
"I will be there shortly," Jun advised after a few seconds of silence.
"Alone?" I asked.
"Alone," Jun confirmed.
Of course, I didn't believe him. This was why I pretended to disable my gun, but I didn't do it completely. I watched Nix as he followed my lead and did the same. Carmela watched us intently. She caught on quickly. She was not only sexy but savvy and extremely smart as well.
She pretended to disable her stolen ray gun. All three of us were on the same page without having to verbalize it at all, which was very reassuring to me. We needed to be in this together, or we were doomed to fail.
The intercom went silent a few moments later. We didn't get another single word from Jun. He didn't view us as worthy of that decency.
Hewantedus to fester in our nervousness. Hewantedus to be on guard. He thrived on making others feel threatened and weaker than him.
He was nothing more than a coward on the prowl for power. Little did he know that I planned to outsmart him and put him in his fucking place once and for all.
I glanced over at Carmela. Her usually rosy cheeks were pale. Her face was ashen, and she looked extremely nervous.
"Just follow my lead," I mouthed to her as quietly as I could.
She nodded, but her lips were as pale as her cheeks. I wanted her to believe in herself.
I nodded to Nix. "Do we have an understanding of what is going to happen next?" I quietly asked him.
"Abundantly," Nix responded.
A few minutes later, the sound of footsteps thundered down the corridor. Carmela looked like she was going to be sick.
"Just stand behind me," I instructed her.
The less involved she was in this fight, the better— but I was confident that if we needed her— she would provide excellent back up for us, but it was better to wait out the situation to see what would happen, first.
Then, as if expecting an enormous entrance of devotion from everyone that he passed, Imperial Harvester Jun emerged from the shadows. I was sure that he was a terrifying sight to behold for Carmela.
I knew he had to be fifty, or at least close to it, but he didn't look a day over twenty-five, the fucker. Thanks to his robotic body, that was possible for him.
Jun was the master of this harvester ship and he walked with an air of authority that proved his arrogant attitude.
Not only was he a fanatical member of the empirical Belic society, he was also an elitist with tons of power which left room for him to constantly step on, or belittle those whom he viewed as beneath him. He did not treat his crew with the same level of respect that I tried to give to mine.
