I didn't see any screws on the panel, so I tried my luck and attempted to push the panel board open.
It worked. I couldn't believe it wasn't more protected than that, but it was good for me.
I looked at the wires. I saw red, green, and blue ones. Then, at the bottom, I found a solitary yellow wire that was connected to a black button piece. I pressed the black button, but nothing happened. With a groan of frustration, I hastily wrapped my thumb and index finger around the yellow wire and yanked it as hard as I could.
The wire popped out of the black button. The robot's knees buckled, and it made a popping sound. It fell to the floor with a thud.
I couldn't believe how easy that had been. There had to be a catch. I didn't have time to figure out what it was because the other robots were now aware of the fact that I had just disabled one of their counterparts. They went into immediate defense mode.
I had to act quickly, or my entire operation was going to get compromised. These robots had rageful expressions on their snarly faces.
I worked from the back, plucking the yellow wires out of the other two hovering around Cyburn.
It worked, and I was able to shut them all down. Cyburn stood up a few seconds later. He was a little shaky, but he wore a stony expression at first as he came out of his stupor of shock. He glanced at me and smiled, panting hard.
"Thank you. I didn't think I was going to get out of that one." He breathed a sigh of relief.
"You did most of the work," I assured him. "I just stepped in to help a little bit."
"You did more than a little bit," Cyburn said, glancing around at the hoard of disabled and dead robots that we had taken out. I couldn't believe that we had been able to do all of this ourselves. I was astounded, but grateful. I was also reeling.
"This is probably not the last time we are going to have to deal with this kind of problem," I said regretfully.
"Unfortunately, you're probably right," Cyburn agreed. He exchanged an apprehensive glance with Nix.
Cyburn put his hand on the small of my back again. He did it so effortlessly. He was graceful about it, as if he had a lot of practice sending shivers of pleasure jogging up and down unassuming female's spines.
I loved it. I was addicted to the feeling. Every time he touched me— wow —what a rush I felt. I couldn't describe the thrill. It was like adrenaline powering through my veins, lighting me up from the inside out.
"You saved me from some pretty crippling injuries," Cyburn said. "I have no doubt that if you hadn't jumped in when you did, they would have finished me off a few minutes later."
I grinned. "You're the one who told me torun, remember?"
Cyburn chuckled. "Yeah, but now I'm glad you didn't listen to me."
"I did what I had to do," I said feeling suddenly powerful and resilient against the odds.
Cyburn made me feel proud of myself, and there was something to be said about that.
"Come on," Cyburn said, his eyes scanning the area. "I know where we can hide while we try to figure out how to get around any more robot patrol units that have been dispatched. They're hungry to kill us, and that's exactly what they're programmed to do. It's up tousto find a way to keep outsmartingthemfirst."
"I agree," I said and nodded enthusiastically.
He took my hand and we jogged on ahead. There was nowhere else to go but forward, and I was starting to feel like we were becoming a real team— set on domination over this entire robot-run ship. If I kept the faith alive, I would eventually start to believe that the tide might start tipping in our favor.

CARMELA
“In here," Nix whispered, nudging his chin in the direction of a little hallway to the right of where we were passing on the corridor.
"What do you see?" Cyburn asked, frowning warily.
"A supply closet and it looks like it might be big enough to fit all of us inside for a bit while we hide and wait out the robot patrol storm," Nix whispered again, this time more excitedly.
"Alright let's check it out then," Cyburn said and gently tugged me along because he was still holding my hand.
Nix didn't seem bothered by the flirting and the obvious connection that Cyburn and I had with each other.
