"Working on what? There are more of you on this ship?" I asked.

"A whole team." Cyburn nodded. "We penetrated the ship from the hangar hatch below the ship."

Nix grinned. His whole emerald-complexioned face lit up as if he was born for adventure of this very type.

"We came prepared," Nix added proudly.

At the same moment he said that, a relatively large booming sound exploded in a corridor nearby and to the left and back of us. I tried my best not to scream, but a little guttural yell came out anyway.

Cyburn pressed his strong, muscular, leaf-green chest to mine. he stood in front of me as if he were a barricade of sorts, shielding me.

He gently pushed one finger to my lips "Shh…" he trailed off with a delicate expression on his face. His black eyes flickered with empathy. He was insanely alluring. There was so much mystery yet to be unveiled behind those dark eyes of his that I couldn't wait to explore.

I craved more from him. I wanted more. I needed his full, undivided attention and I didn't evenknowhim. What thehellwas wrong with me? I certainly couldn't figure it out.

I felt a tingling sensation between my legs. How could Ipossiblybe both arousedandscared half to death at the same time? I couldn't explain it, but Cyburn certainly had that exceptional charge over me.

"What…wasthat?" I asked, hearing the shakiness of terror coming out in my voice.

I was worried that whatever had just happened, was going to blow this ship to bits or blow out the air lock and we'd go hurtling through the vacuum of space any second.

"That's the crew we just mentioned." Cyburn gazed at me with such compassion in his eyes that it made my heart thunder with excitement.

His smile was frisky. "My crew is setting off mini-explosions to try and distract the robots and the cyborgs running this ship. I told them to do it, and they gladly agreed. They like mischief and angering the Belic's any chance they can get."

"It didn't sound toominito me," I lightly protested, trying to return Cyburn's smile but failing.

"Trust me, they know what they are doing," Cyburn said with an authentic smile this time.

"You keep telling me that," I said, finally giving him a delicate chuckle.

Cyburn's black eyes danced with the same mischief he described in his clan.

Were we seriouslyflirtingwith each other at a time like this? What was evenmoremortifying was the fact that he seemed to be catching on to the fact that I was catastrophically attracted to him.

He seemed like he wanted to milk my new and spontaneous obsession for all it was worth. If he was willing to flirtbackwith me, did that mean that he was attracted tometoo? Or was he just appeasing me to be polite? Either way, I was still mortified.

Another boom set off an alarm bell in my mind and I was triggered with another bout of electrifying shock that rippled like a current through my body. Cyburn's handsomeness could only distract me so far before the fright of reality set back into my bones.

I seriously had no clue what was happening. It seemed like both a million years ago and just a few minutes ago that I was abducted in plain sight from the quiet, residential street in downtown Boston. Now I could be anywhere out there roaming deep space on a robot mothership— and I'm talking to two massive aliens, one of whom I want to jump his bones the first chance I got.

Life was unpredictable that way. You never knew what was going to happen to you from one moment to the next. Sure, you could plan and estimate for the future, but in the end, was any of the struggle worth it?

Nothing was closer to the truth now that I washereon this robot ship speeding through space at God only knew how many miles an hour. It was like an eye-opening experience, as frightening as it was.

Sometimes you just had to roll with the punches. The stress and the misery just didn't seem worth it to me anymore, especially if you couldn't control your future. You could make the plans, but sometimes the universe threw you in a whole different direction.

I had to make the most of what was happening to me. I'd studied robotics my entire career. Who knew? Everything happened for a reason, as the saying went, and I was never one to debate it much because I wanted to believe that it was true to a certain degree.

Maybe I had been sent here for a reason after all. Maybe these new alien friends needed me more than either of us even realized.

Could this be my chance to shine and to prove tomyselfjust how hard I'd work and that the hard work had inevitably paid off in the end?

Another bang and boom quaked through my eardrums, and then the walls shook around us. I let out a little yelp of surprise, but again, somehow, I miraculously managednotto scream.

We rushed down the corridor. Cyburn held my left hand with his while he kept his ray gun out and ready to attack anything and everything, if necessary, with his free hand.

I had my ray gun in my free hand too. I kept it close and ready, but I wasn't sure I would even know how to use it if the time came. I'd swiped it off the guard in the laboratory room simply as a way to defend myself on the spot, although I hadn't really thought about it at the time. It was just my rash way of doing literallyanythingI could to stay alive.
