I nod my head. “I need to financially contribute.” It’s a hard limit for me. One of the best parts of being a pack is how everyone contributes in their own form.
“Of course, Alpha.” He says it sincerely and I smile.
I pull up to the parking lot and he smiles widely. “Okay, this is going to be fun.”
The complex has everything: softball cages, mini golf, virtual golf, laser tag. Seeing his excitement has my nerves calming. Seeing the joy he has on his face as we get out of the truck and I take his hand in mine is everything.
“What first?” I ask.
“I’m going to destroy you in golf,” he says.
“Wanna bet?” Tugging his hand along, I pay the cashier so that we have cards to play the arcade games and we can do all the other activities.
“Winner buys dinner,” he says.
“Well, I was planning on paying anyway,” I reply.
“It’s a reassurance that you won’t sandbag.”
“Oh, you’re cute.” I lean over, my larger body hovering against his back. “How about we make it even more interesting? Something I want even more than taking you out to dinner and paying?”
“What’s that?” he whispers.
“Winner gets on their knees for the other.”
That shuts him up as I hand the woman my credit card and gather our gaming cards and tickets to do all the games the center provides.
To my dismay, the Beta was far better at golf than me. His southern accent should have tipped me off to having a country club membership of some kind. I beat him in softball and now all we have left is laser tag.
We’ve made sure that we’re on opposite teams. The person to finish with the most points will be deemed the winner and will collect their prize tonight. As much as I want to win, I would be fine losing as well. Watching him smile and having this friendly competition makes it clear why everyone else in the pack fell for him so easily.
Emmett is just easy to be around. He enjoys the little things in life. I just want to show him that I know he is special and his part in the pack is just as important as any other member.
“I think I like my chances,” he says, eyeing me up with a hungry stare.
“Oh yeah, why’s that?”
“You’re a pretty large target,” he replies with a smile.
“You know I did security for years? My aim is immaculate. And I might be big, but I’m stealthy as fuck,” I say, earning me a rumbling laugh. My cheeks hurt from smiling so much.
“We will see about that.”
Emmett stands to the left with the red team, while I stand to the right with the green team. A small child, well, he looks considerably small to me, looks up at me with his mouth wide open. “The Rock is on our team,” he says to his friend.
I don’t even look like The Rock. I look over at Emmett with a glare as he giggles, along with the children.
One of the high schoolers who works here claps his hands together. “Remember, no rough housing, no running, and no bullying. You will respawn five seconds after you are hit. The team with the most collective points at the end wins. You’ll be able to check your score based on the number plastered on your vest.”
“The big guy is going to kill our score,” one of the little shitheads in front of me says. Is tripping a child inside of laser tag considered bullying? Most likely. I keep my mouth shut and glare at the little brats. When we get Kelsey pregnant, our children will be perfect little angels.
Damn, that thought hit me out of nowhere… but it’s definitely not unpleasant.
“When the buzzer sounds, the red team will enter the door to the right and the green team will enter through the left. You will have thirty seconds until the game starts.”
I give Emmett a saucy wink, which he returns when the buzzer sounds and our teams rush our respective doors. While the prize on the table is a decent enough motivation, it’s purely ego at this point. How long will he taunt me by kicking my ass in laser tag if I don’t win?
The laser tag room is set up like a maze, the corners of walls are lined with neon glowing lights and the rest of the room is dark so you can spot the opposing team’s vests. It’s obscenely loud with metal music. It’s so loud I can feel the rumbling base beneath my feet.
