“Thank you for going through the initial ideas for the renovations. We’ll leave visiting the first property until the new year.”
“That’s good. I have the pictures and colour schemes required. As I suggested, because they’re all Victorian buildings, I think you should keep as many of the original features as possible.”
Her eyes lit up with excitement. “Oh definitely. Especially the fireplaces with those gorgeous tiles.”
This project had me fired up. It seemed as though my life was finally coming together.
I hugged her. “Okay, we’ll talk soon. Take care and call me when you get in.”
“I will, I promise.”
I watched her get into her car and drive away. When I went back, the three men were lounging in the living room in front of the fire, all of them almost asleep. I stood with my arms crossed and tutted, bringing them awake.
“Look at you three. Give you a homecooked meal and stick you in front of a fire and you’re happy.”
Ben patted the seat beside him. “Then come and join us, Rubes. We can look at the pretty Christmas lights and listen to Fred snoring.”
We all laughed as Fred’s head lifted at the sound of his name.
Ben left an hour later. He had an early start in the morning and would be busy all day. Plus, he was on call that night.
“Why don’t you leave Fred with us tonight?” I suggested.
“Are you sure?”
“Of course. You need a good night’s sleep. We have been ratherbusyover the last twenty-four hours.”
He sighed. “I wish I didn’t have to leave you.” He picked up a strand of my hair and twirled it around his finger.
“Me too. Do you want me to stay tomorrow night?”
“Would you?”
“Couldn’t think of anything I’d rather be doing. And if you get a call out, I can be there when you come home with a warm drink and a pair of loving arms.”
He rested his forehead against mine. “I like the sound of that.”
We kissed deeply and he left.
I peered into the living room, Grandad was talking softly to Fred.
“Fancy a cuppa, Grandad?”
“Yes, please, love. Have we got Fred as a houseguest tonight?”
I walked over to him, dropped a kiss on his head, and patted Fred. “I offered. Ben has a very early start tomorrow. Um, Grandad?”
He raised a brow at me.
“Do you mind if I stay at Ben’s tomorrow night?”
His eyes widened. “Why would I mind? Ruby, you two were made for each other. I’m just sorry it took a crisis to bring you together.”
“Me too, but at least we are now. Oh, Grandad. I’ve never felt like this before.”
His smile softened. “You’re going to have the sort of love I shared with your nan. I am so happy for you.”
I threw my arms around his neck. “I love you, Grandad.”
