“Marie, don’t you ever knock?” Ben sounded exasperated.
“I did, big brother. Three times in fact. It seems the two of you were so busy kissing the hell out of each other that you didn’t hear me use my key. Oh, I’m so happy for you.”
She rushed at us, holding us tightly.
Ben wriggled out of her grasp. “What exactly are you doing here, Marie?”
Marie and I shared a look. I wondered just how long she had waited for this to happen. Probably as long as us.
“You told me Ruby was staying overnight and invited me over for breakfast with both of you.”
Ben groaned and pulled me to him. “Sorry, Rubes. I forgot to tell you.”
I giggled. “Probably because we were busy, eh?” I nudged him and winked.
He blushed.
“Right, you two. On this occasion, I think three’s a crowd. I’m off.”
Ben glanced at me and raised his eyebrows. I knew what he was thinking.
“No, Marie. Please stay. We have things to tell you.”
She clapped her hands over her ears. “Nope, not listening. You keep your sexy talk between the two of you.”
Ben went to her and took her hands away. “No, sis. This is important.”
Once we sat down to eat our breakfast, we filled her in on what had happened.
Marie’s cutlery clattered to her plate, mouth going wide. “Oh. My. God. You could have been killed,” she screeched. “And… and that other woman. I have no words.”
I covered my hand with hers. “He’ll be caught and put in jail until he rots.”
“The fact that two countries’ police forces want him means he’s going to be in for a long sentence,” Ben added.
“What about Tom? Does he know?”
“We’re going to tell him tonight. I’m making dinner. Join us.”
She smiled at me. “I’d like that. Ben, when do you go to work?”
“I’m on from one until six.”
“Right, I’ll come back here about twelve-thirty, pick Ruby and Fred up, and stay with her at Tom’s.”
“It’s okay,” I assured her. “I’ll be fine.”
“Well, I do have an ulterior motive.” A mischievous glint sparkled in her eyes. “I’d like to talk interior designs.”
“I’d like that too, and it’ll take my mind off other things.”
She stood. “Then it’s settled. I’ll leave you two lovebirds alone to have some quality time.” Her words were heavy with meaning.
After Marie hugged me, Ben ushered Marie towards the front door. I heard them talking in low voices but couldn’t make out what they were saying. Not wishing to eavesdrop, I started clearing away the breakfast things.
I felt Ben’s arms around my waist. He brushed my hair away from my neck with his nose and laid soft kisses on my sensitive skin.
“What do you fancy doing until twelve-thirty, beautiful?” he asked against my neck.
