THIRTY-NINE

Abe

I wasin my room getting ready for work when Mikey called.

Iris was sitting on the bed with Tris in her lap, and she watched as I answered the phone.

“Hello?”

“You home?” Mikey asked.

“I am,” I said. “Why?”

“Someone tipped us off. We made a move on Tad, and he’s on the run. He knows you were involved, and he’s on the way. But we’re on his ass, so don’t worry. If he shows up, just keep him busy for a few minutes and we’ll be right there,” he said.

“Wait, you mean he’s on the way here now?” I asked, but Mikey was already off the phone. I heard him barking orders in the background, and I slipped my phone into my pocket. I didn’t even bother hanging up.

“What’s going on?” Iris asked.

“Stay here,” I told her.

“Wait! Abe!” she yelled after me, but I was already on my way out the bedroom door. She rushed through the door to the top of the stairs, but I whirled around halfway to the bottom and gave her a look.

“I lost you once!” I yelled. “And I’m not doing it again! You get back in that room with Tristan and you stay there until it’s safe for you to come out!”

Iris looked at me with wide eyes as she turned and headed back into the bedroom. I’d never raised my voice to her before, and she must have realized just how serious I truly was.

If I understood what Mikey was saying, then that meant Tad was on the way to my place. And I had a feeling he’d be coming with guns blazing. He hadn’t been happy with me for a while now, and if he knew that I was behind him getting caught, then I had no doubt he would take strong measures into his own hands.

I heard the bikes roaring in my direction before I saw them, and there was no sign of the FBI agents, either. I stood outside my door, however, blocking the way into the house and my family.

The bikes came to a screeching halt in front of my house. There were six other men along with Tad, but he was the one with his gun drawn, and he came storming up to my yard with fury etched into his features.

“That’s close enough!” I yelled at him before he had the chance to step onto the grass.

“You serious?” he asked, looking at me incredulously.

“I said that’s far enough,” I repeated. “This is my house, and I don’t want you coming onto my property with that thing in your hand.”

“You motherfucker,” he said. “After all I’ve done for you, you betray me? You went to the feds and you told them about us? You decide that you would rather fraternize with the enemy and play house with some whore you picked up off the street rather than be loyal to your own brothers?”

“Don’t you dare say that about my girl, and I think you need to reevaluate who the enemy is around here!” I shot back. “You are the one who’s buying the guns and the drugs and distributing them to the people who want to hurt others. I haven’t seen any of that coming from Trey, and I would rather live in a place without violence than with it!”

“I gave you the chance of a lifetime, and you have thrown it all away because you think you have some idea of what’s right,” Tad scoffed. “You knew what the consequences would be when you signed up to join the club. You were to be loyal to the club above all else, and if you ever thought the day would come when you wanted to turn your back on us, you would be honest and up front about that with the rest of the men! Instead, you have proven to be a traitor! Just like your father!”

“Don’t you dare talk about my father after the way you’ve changed!” I snapped. “You have no idea what’s going on in my head, and you don’t know half the man my father was!”

“I know that you are more like him than you ought to be, and now you’ve made the biggest mistake you could have made! You know, I was willing to forgive the fact that you were stupid enough to let that man live next to you without saying anything to me. I was even willing to forgive when I heard that you were offering your protection to some woman without coming to me and asking my permission for that first. But when I learned that you had been in contact with the FBI and you were working with the enemy on top of it, that was just too much,” Tad said.

He was walking back and forth on the sidewalk as he spoke, and the men who had accompanied him all stood behind with their hands clasped in front of them. It was clear they were nervous with what Tad was doing, but they weren’t going to stand up to him.

I was popular with most of the other men in the MC, but Tad was the president. So when it came down to it, they were going to pick his side over mine, every time. If they were to go against Tad, there was a chance they would meet the same fate that was being given to me right now – a fate that they didn’t want to ever have to deal with.

I knew that it was something that happened from time to time within MCs, but I never thought it would happen in this one. Tad had changed a lot with his presidency, that was true, but coming down to executing his own men because of his own anger against them was more than I had ever wanted to deal with.

“I’m done!” I shouted.

“You’re done?” Tad laughed. “You say that as though you have any choice in the matter. What you’ve done is punishable by death, and with the way you’ve decided to handle it, I’m telling you right now that you’re sentenced to death!”
