“Oh dear,” I said with a shake of my head and a grin on my face. “I think he’s just going to have to get over it.”
“Pretty sure that’s not going to be an issue,” he said.
Glenn came into the house with us and immediately got on the phone with his brother. His brother knew how to fix locks, and Abe wanted that door fixed before the day was over. He didn’t care if he was going to be home with us or not.
There was no way he was going to bed until we had another lock in place. Perhaps even two. I wasn’t picky. I never wanted to worry about anyone breaking into the place again – and if we could put a safety chain along the top of the door, even better.
I didn’t see a way we could go overboard with the safety, and for the first time, Abe agreed with me.
Glenn promised he would do all he could, and Abe took me into the living room, sitting with me and Tris on the couch while Glenn was on the phone.
“I’m so glad you two are back,” he said as he held me.
“I’m so glad you came for us,” I told him. “I’m not sure what would have happened if you hadn’t.”
“That wasn’t even an option,” Abe assured me. “Once I heard that you had been taken, I was ready to burn the whole town down until I was able to find you. There was no way that guy was going to get away with that.”
“I’m just glad you were able to come so quickly,” I said. “I was scared he was going to kill me before you got to me. I didn’t know if my phone would last long enough for you to find me, or what would happen if we were out of service. There were so many things that could have gone wrong, I just don’t want to think about it.”
“Then don’t,” Abe said as he gave me a hug. “You are here now, and Glenn’s brother is on the way to fix the door. We’re not moving from this couch until we know for sure that door is fixed. And I’m going to check in with you every time I get to work to make sure you locked the door after I left. No exceptions.”
“I don’t think you’ll ever have to worry about that,” I said with a laugh. “There’s something about being kidnapped that seems to make me want to be extra careful when it comes to safety from here on out.”
“And why don’t you do us both a favor,” Abe said.
“What’s that?” I asked.
“Why don’t you pick better men to date? I don’t want to have to keep chasing psychos down every time you decide you’re done with their bullshit,” he said with a wink.
“Alright. If you can think of someone I can date who isn’t a psycho, then I’ll do my best to keep him around. That should help you out, right?” I asked.
“I’ll think about it,” he said.
I wrapped my arms around him and laid my head on his shoulder. I felt safe for the first time all day, and it was nearly overwhelming. Glenn’s brother did come right away to fix the door, and it didn’t take long before the two of them were telling us goodnight.
“I’ll call you in the morning and see how you’re doing,” Abe said. “You might want to put some ice on that leg when you get home.”
“You’re too kind,” Glenn said. “I’ll let you know.”
He left with his brother, and I suddenly felt like I was waking up from a dream. I was back home, Tris was sleeping next to me on the couch, and I was safely with Abe. Things were back to normal, as though nothing had happened at all. It was almost impossible to think that we had nearly been killed that day.
“So,” I said at last. “Are you hungry?”
Abe looked at me for a second, then burst out laughing.
“What?” I asked in surprise.
“Oh, nothing,” he said. “It’s just that you make me happy.”
I wasn’t sure what he meant, but I smiled, too.
I guessed it didn’t matter what was making him laugh. As long as I was making him happy, then I was happy with the situation, too.
We decided the best thing to do was to order a pizza and take the night off from cooking. It had been a long day, and I was okay with having a rest. It might not be the healthiest way of doing things, but I was okay with that.
I was ready to crawl into bed already, and it was barely six in the evening.
What a day it had been. But then, it was a wonderful day, too.
It was the day I’d gotten my freedom.
