“What the fuck, man? Are you really watching what I’m eating for lunch that close? What? Do you want to share?” I asked. I hoped that my comment would make him back off, but he just laughed.
“Actually, if you look at the sad thing I’m calling lunch, yes, I would be happy to share. But I don’t want to offend your new girlfriend,” he said.
“What girlfriend?” I asked.
My heart skipped a beat in my chest when he said the word. He hadn’t been over to my house, there was no way he’d know anything about Iris. And, if he did, how the hell was I going to convince him not to say anything to anyone else in the club?
Glenn was the closest thing I considered to having a friend, and the thought of him knowing that about me still scared the ever-living shit out of me. I had a problem with trusting people to begin with, and this could be something that got me thrown out of the club, if not something worse.
“You know, that chick who called you the other day that you blew off. Try to tell me that there’s nothing going on, but she’s sending you food in your lunch now. Maybe you want to think about making things a little more official with her before I step in and show her what a real man can do.” He laughed again.
I relaxed slightly, realizing that he was talking about the girl I’d made up when we were leaving the clubhouse a few days before. It wasn’t much of an alibi, but it would be enough to get him off my back for now.
I could just keep pretending she was real and hope that he forgot all about it. After all, it wasn’t unusual for me to have some chick after me. I had fun with them for a while, then I was happy to let them move on to someone else.
He wouldn’t think it strange at all for that to be the situation with someone else.
“I don’t know,” I said. “You know how women are as soon as you act like you want them. I don’t want her to come after my wallet or my space or anything any more than she already has.”
“Well, if she’s making you food like that, I don’t see what the problem is.” Glenn winked. “If you don’t mind, I’ll take a bite.”
“Fine with me,” I said. “If it gets you to shut the fuck up about what I’m having for lunch. You can scream it out all you want, I didn’t bring enough to share with the whole class, and the more of a thing you make of this, the more likely someone is going to come over and see what all the fuss is about.”
“Oh, get over yourself,” Glenn said. “You’re not that interesting.”
“But you act like everything I do is the end of the world.” I rolled my eyes. “Don’t you think I could do the same thing back to you if I wanted? You don’t want people to come all over your business, do you?”
“Alright, alright, I’ll back off, but damn. You get really defensive over this issue. Makes me wonder if you do have feelings for this girl and you just don’t want to admit it.” He grinned.
“Makes me think that you better just fuck off,” I said as I tossed my fork at him.
He laughed but didn’t pursue it any further. And I was okay with that.
“You know how I am with girls in my life,” I said. “I like to keep them under wraps.”
“You like to keep them under the covers,” Glenn teased, but I just shook my head.
“If she starts to really matter, I’ll tell you about her,” I promised.
“Doubt it,” Glenn replied. “But that’s fine. I don’t need to hear about all your conquests.”
“Then you’re not going to keep asking about what I bring for lunch?” I replied.
“Fine,” he said.
He shook his head again and started talking about the latest show he’d been watching, and that was fine with me. Anything that kept him off my back for now made me happy. I didn’t want to talk about Iris. I didn’t want to talk about this made-up girl, either.
I just wanted to let the entire thing go.
I knew there was a lot of risk having her in my house, and I felt bad not telling Glenn about her. It wasn’t that I didn’t trust him entirely, but I didn’t want anyone to have that kind of information on me. The fact of the matter was that it was tough for me to trust anyone, even the one man in the entire MC I considered to be my friend.
Perhaps the day would come when I would be able to be honest with him about what had been going on with me, but now wasn’t the right time. I had to figure some shit out, and the fewer people who were involved, the better.
I had a feeling Iris would like for fewer people to know about her being here, too.
She had come here for protection, and the best way for me to protect her would be to make sure her existence here was as lowkey as possible. It would be easier if I could get the MC involved and make sure that guy was out of the picture once and for all, but that wasn’t the case anymore.
Now, I had to take care of her on my own time, and I was doing my best.
