“Who’s this guy?” Glenn asked.
“Trey, Glenn. Glenn, Trey,” I said as I motioned to the two of them.
They made their introductions quickly, and I quickly ran through my contacts on my phone. I didn’t care if we were supposed to be enemies. If Trey could help me find Iris, I would be on his side in a heartbeat. Tad could say what he would about this situation, I wasn’t about to put Iris on the line out of principle.
“Who are you calling?” Glenn asked, but I was already talking.
“Special Agent Michael Ward,” the voice on the other end of the line said.
“Mikey, sorry to bother you, but I need your help right now,” I said.
“Abe? I’m on my way to Holbrook right now with a team from the task force. We’re investigating what’s going on with Tad, but we’re going to need a bit more proof before we can make any arrests. What’s going on?” he asked.
“I’m glad you’re headed this way because my girlfriend and son have been kidnapped!” I yelled into the phone. “And this guy who took her, he’s her ex and a potentially dangerous stalker. I need you to get down here as fast as you can, and your team needs to make this top priority!”
I knew I didn’t have the authority to boss the feds around, but I hoped with the friendship that Mikey had had with my father in the past that was enough for him to take this seriously. Sure, a woman and her son wasn’t the top priority of the drug task force, and removing Tad from his position of power would do the community more good than going after a deranged stalker, but the way I saw it, her life could very well be in danger, and the only man who had the authority to actually lock this guy up was on the way now.
“Calm down,” Mikey said. “We’re on our way. I’ll talk to you as soon as I’m there. Seal off the area so it’s not contaminated with other scents and prints, and we’ll check it out as soon as we can.”
“Got it,” I said.
But I wasn’t going to waste time with that. As soon as I hung up the phone, I immediately thought to call one of my brothers. But, what good would that do? I was stuck in another town, and Iris wasn’t their problem. They didn’t care what I was doing in my love life.
They cared about the inheritance and taking care of our own parts of this contract we’d all agreed to handle. I wasn’t going to drag them down here into this. If I was going to take care of Iris, then I was the one who had to do it. I promised her that it would be me, after all, and I wasn’t going to let her down now.
“Who was that?” Trey asked.
“An old friend of mine,” I said. “FBI. They’re on the way for another reason, but the head guy is going to take the time to look over this situation and give us some help.”
“Good,” Glenn said. “But don’t tell me we’re just hanging out here until it happens. You’re going crazy already.”
“You bet your ass I’m not laying around here and just waiting for the cavalry to arrive. I’m getting my gun and I’m getting on that damn bike and I’m going after my family!”
“Where do you want me to go?” Glenn asked.
“You and Trey need to start looking all over town. I’m not sure if he’s going to stay close to home and hide in plain sight, or if he’s going to take her away from here and go with somewhere he is more familiar with and we aren’t. Or, he might have scoped out another place altogether. I don’t know. But I do know that we’ll cover more ground if we split up, and that’s what we need to do right now,” I said.
“Roger,” Glenn said.
“Got it,” Trey agreed.
“And don’t hesitate to do what you have to in order to keep Iris safe. This guy has proven to be dangerous, and I’m not sure how far he’s going to go to make sure no one can get to her but him. If it comes down to it, you shoot, and you shoot to kill. Just makes sure of your shot,” I said.
Both men agreed, and Trey headed back to his own place to get a few things before he hit the road as well. I was so frustrated, I wanted to scream. I blamed myself for this happening. It didn’t matter to me that I had been at work and there was no reason to think that this was a possibility.
The fact of the matter was that she had come to me for protection, and I hadn’t kept her safe. She had been taken right out of the very home where I had promised her nothing could get to her. And she had been taken with her little boy in her arms. She had to be terrified.
I tried not to imagine how scared she would be for her son, or for herself, for that matter. I knew Joel scared the shit out of her, and I also knew that she would be willing to do anything for the safety of her son. It sickened me to think of what Joel might make her do for the mere sake of being a sadistic monster.
I could kill him with my own hands right now. That was how pissed off with him I was.
But, I also knew that I had to keep my head on straight. The only way I was going to keep her safe and bring her home was to keep myself level and one step ahead of him mentally.
I had no control over where he was going right now, but I did know that once I caught up with him, there would be hell to pay. I wasn’t the forgiving type, that was for sure, and if he did so much as to harm a single hair on her or Tris’s head, I would rip him limb from limb.
I put my pistol into my pocket and checked to make sure I had an extra clip of ammo.
Things were going to go down hard when I caught up to this guy. I was already sure of that. I didn’t care what I had to do to get Iris back. This bastard had pissed off the wrong person for the last time, and now he would pay dearly.
I would personally see to it that he did.
