“What are you doing?” I asked with a laugh.

“They say that you should kiss the cook,” he said, his tone low and hungry. My body responded, and I eagerly looked up into his face as he lowered his mouth to mine. Our lips met, and I nearly saw fireworks.

He tasted like chocolate chip cookies, and his hands were firm and strong on my body. I could have melted right there, letting him take me in the middle of the kitchen, bent over one of the counters. I was more than ready for our moment to take that naughty turn when suddenly there was a knock at the door.

“Who the hell could that be?” Abe grunted. He didn’t seem happy about it, but that all changed as soon as he opened the door.

Glenn’s voice filled the air, along with a laugh and protests as Abe asked him what he was doing up.

“I thought you were going to be down for the count for at least a couple weeks,” I said when Glenn hobbled into the kitchen.

“I’m supposed to be,” he said. “But they gave me these crutches. Who’s going to give a man like me a pair of crutches and tell me how to use them, then tell me not to use them for two weeks? Idiots.”

“So you drove over here?” Abe asked.

“My truck,” Glenn said. “I can manage it with the cast. Don’t you worry. And by the looks of things, I showed up at the right time. I’m not seeing you running to bring me any warm cookies there, are you?”

“That was the first thing on my mind,” Abe sarcastically replied, and Glenn shook his head, winking at me.

“I tell you. You think that you found a buddy, and the next thing you know, he dumps you alone in your house with broken bones and heads off to have warm chocolate chip cookies while you lay there with nothing more than crackers. Sheesh.” He rolled his eyes, and I laughed.

I grabbed a few of the warm cookies and put them on a plate, handing it to Abe.

“Why don’t the two of you go to the dining room to have those? That way Glenn can have a seat and get off that leg, and you can both have more cookies,” I said.

“Sounds amazing,” Abe said.

“But don’t eat too much,” I warned. “I’m going to bring lunch out in a minute, and I don’t need you spoiling the hard work I put into that with cookies.”

“Yes, ma’am,” he said.

They headed to the other room, and Tristan came running from the spare bedroom. He must have woken when he heard Glenn arrive, but he was used to waking up in this house now, and he loved both Abe and Glenn, too. It didn’t bother him at all to get himself up and come out to the living room alone, especially when he knew two of his favorite people were there.

Abe scooped Tris up in his arms then let Tris sit on his lap while he gave him a cookie. I bit my tongue. It was natural for me to tell him to keep an eye on Tris to make sure he didn’t get too big of a bite. But with Abe, I didn’t have to do that.

His fatherly instincts were so strong, he knew just what to do from the beginning it seemed. I could turn my attention back to the lunch and not have to worry about what Tris was doing with Glenn and Abe out there.

It wasn’t long before Glenn was the one with Tris sitting on his lap, laughing at the way the little boy didn’t know what to do with his cast.

“He’s getting chocolate all over it!” Glenn cried out.

“I’ll get you a washcloth,” Abe laughed at his friend.

I had my back turned to the situation, so I was both surprised and shocked when Abe came directly up behind me and kissed me on the back of my neck. It sent goosebumps all the way down my arms and legs, and I nearly spun around to slap him.

Of course, there was no hiding the grin on my face, or the blush that flew to my cheeks at the gesture. I couldn’t ever get enough of him doing that. That was for damn sure.

But he had been so swift coming up behind me as he did, he was already back to the dining room handing Glenn the washcloth for his cast.

I shook my head. I still had a broad smile on my face as I turned back to figure out how I was going to make a lunch for three people on the fly. I never thought I could feel this way about anyone, let alone Abe.

But here I was.

I hadn’t come here to fall in love with him. In fact, that was the last thing on my mind as I made that mad dash to get here. I just wanted help. I wanted safety. I didn’t know what else awaited me when I got here.

There was a part of me that wished I had.

Perhaps I would have gotten away from Joel a lot sooner.
