Sure, things hadn’t always been great between us, but that was a long time ago.

I packed the car with the few things I was bringing, then I retrieved Tristan from my neighbor. Maria had been kind enough to pack us some food for the road, and I cried when I told her goodbye.

But I couldn’t linger. I had to put space between me and my ex before he did something drastic. With the way he was acting, I didn’t want to push my luck. I had to get out of here.

I pulled onto the street and turned my car north. I was heading to Holbrook, alright, and with any luck, I’d be there before nightfall. It would be a long day behind the wheel, but each mile eaten was another mile between me and Joel.

As long as Abe didn’t ask me all the details of what had been going on the past two years, I would be okay.

Well, as long as he didn’t dig too deeply around Tristan, either.

That was a secret I was more than happy to keep, and I planned to carry it to the grave.

I just needed help.

And Abe was the man to do it.
