And if it is me he wants, how do I navigate his waters to find my confidence?

“Maybe I really do need a break.”

A break from everything.

From everyone.

From Louisville.

From Bardstown.

An airplane flies overhead and I lift my head to watch the white streak of cloud elongating across the sky.

“Yeah. Maybe I need a break.”

Opening the door to our apartment building, I hit the elevator button for the loft and then swipe up on my cellphone turning it on and tapping on the contact for the one and only person I know I can call right now who won’t judge me in one way or another.

“Hey Sis. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“Hey Wes. Do you have a minute?”

Chapter 20

Emmett

“Is she always like that? Something tells me she’s not always like that.”

I stand in the hallway, Cheyenne still by my side, as Emily nearly makes a run for it out the office door. My heart wants to run after her, hold her, and make sure she’s really alright. But the realist in me…the conscience that knows he fucked up yesterday and needs to put his tail between his legs and get to work, is what keeps me from liftoff.

“She’s…very rarely ever like that, Cheyenne.”

“I had a feeling.”

“What do you suppose that was all about?”

She shrugs as we finally step into our office. “Your guess is as good as mine I suppose. Has something been bothering her lately?”

“Uh, not that I can think of. I mean…she kinda got mad at me last night and spent the night in her room, but if she was really that mad, she wouldn’t have come here.”

Seeing Emily walk out of my office was indeed a huge surprise since she’s never been in my office building before. I don’t know why I’ve never brought her here or showed her around. I suppose that kind of thing isn’t normally done. People don’t just take their best friends in to work to show them around.

Cheyenne’s eyes narrow as she gazes out into the hallway and then back at me.

“What? What are you thinking?”

“Maybe nothing at all, but there wasn’t something that happened on social media with Emily today was there?”

I start to pull my phone from my pocket as I respond, “Not that I know of. What would make you think that?”

She rolls her eyes. “It’s no big deal. I just heard a couple of the ladies gossiping and I got the impression it was about you, but Katy Maley mentioned something about Instagram, so I thought, you know. Maybe it had something to do with that. I would imagine you would know if it did though.”

“Hmm.” I tap my Instagram app and scroll through my feed. “There’s nothing out of the ordinary for me. It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything.”

“No tags or anything for you?”

I shake my head. “Nope.”

“What about Emily?”
