Page 40 of Loving Lex

Kill me.

Lex. He was sleeping just—

“Lex!” I screamed with the last of my strength, but even in my swiftly fading state, I knew he didn’t hear me. No one heard me.

“Shut up,” the voice growled. “Time to go to sleep.”

And as if on command, my body went limp, my thoughts swirling into a black hole.

I would die like this.

No one would know.

CHAPTER NINE

Lex

Irolled overto sunshine streaming in my window and hitting me square in the face. I’d obviously been asleep for a while. Foggy, I ran a hand down my stubbled face and tried to gain my bearings.

Slowly, the gears began to click into place.

My head was thick, like it was filled with watery cement, but the pain was gone, thank fuck. I’d obviously slept off a doozy. It’d been a while since I’d had a migraine that bad.

“Fuck.” My mouth felt like cotton around the word, and I slowly rolled to sit up.

Water.

I needed water.

Wait. Things began to click into place a little quicker. I turned to glance over my shoulder at the space in the bed that Shay usually occupied. It was empty. “Baby?” I croaked. I cleared my throat. “Shay?” I stood and padded toward the bathroom, noting that she’d neatly reorganized my pill bottles on the counter. The air still held the faint scent of her shower.

Frowning, I glanced at the clock next to the bed. It was almost noon. She’d probably already eaten breakfast and was on the computer or watching TV or something. Damned headaches.

I yanked on a pair of basketball shorts and made my way to the kitchen to grab a water bottle. No Shay. Something about that didn’t sit right, but I wasn’t her keeper, so I stuffed back any sense of entitlement I had. I was the one who’d slept in like a lazy ass on painkillers. She probably had shit to do. Who was I to expect her to wait around on me? Still—

My gaze caught on a slip of paper under the salt shaker, and I picked it up.

Lex,

I didn’t want to wake you up—you’re so cute when you sleep. :)

I have some errands to run so I borrowed your truck, hope you don’t mind. Be back before noon. I’ll bring lunch.

Your Queen

xoxo

That woman.

I shook my head. How far gone was I that I didn’t give a shit that she’d taken my truck? And she was bringing food? I mean, I just wanted to see her again, but... I could eat.

While I waited, I shaved, took a quick shower, and put on a pair of jeans and the blue t-shirt she liked on me... something about my eyes. I knew I was bordering on sappy, but I couldn’t help myself. I liked making her happy.

Noon came and went, and when she still wasn’t there by one, I grabbed my cell and called her. It rolled straight to voicemail.

My chest tightened, and I pushed that away. I was being ridiculous. She probably just got delayed or her phone died. There were a million explanations. That didn’t stop my feet from carrying me to the door and down the corridor to the top of the stairs.

My truck was sitting right in its spot.
