“My girlfriend. She works at Cameo.”
He flicked JD a glance with a tip of his head, which set the big man into motion. He stepped outside as Kane motioned for me to follow him.
We entered his office and he shut the door, then strode behind his desk to sink into his plush leather chair. He leaned forward on his elbows. “Tell me everything.”
I don’t know what it was, but something in that thirty-second exchange told me that Gideon Kane had nothing to do with Shay’s disappearance and he was going to do everything in his power to help me get her back. That alone helped me take my first real deep breath in an hour.
While he traced a finger along his whiskey tumbler, I told him what I knew. Every bit of it. Starting with reminding him exactly why I’d come to Vegas in the first place, the fact that Shay had felt like someone was watching her at the club, the tidbits of info Lucky had dug up, and my relationship with his team. If he didn’t like it, well, he could go fuck himself... just as soon as I had Shay back safe and sound. I was done playing games.
Kane sat silently through it all, the tick of his jaw the only indication that he wasn’t made of stone. Just as I finished up, JD rejoined us, his body language instantly telling me something was not right.
“What is it?” Kane asked first.
JD simply pulled his hand from his pocket and opened his fist. Inside, lay a cameo necklace. It looked so tiny and awkward in his giant palm.
I instinctively knew it was hers. Bile rose up my throat in a rush.
“Shay’s?” Kane asked unnecessarily.
JD nodded.
“Where did you find it?” I croaked.
JD’s intense eyes slid to mine, seeming to question if it even mattered. Hell, maybe not, we had no way to track her, but I still had to know. His gaze moved back to his boss, and I felt the silent nod of approval.
“Her locker.”
I reared back at his gritty words, as I’d never heard the man utter a sound. He’d always let his actions, unwavering loyalty, and unmatched penchant for violence speak for him.
“God damn it!” I spun in a circle as I felt myself spiraling.
“Lex.” Gideon’s low voice still held enough authority to halt my frantic movement.
I faced him, channeling all my angry energy into the fists balled at my sides.
His dark gaze seared mine, swearing an unspoken oath. “We’ll find her.”
I nodded, just as my cell phone buzzed with a text. I yanked it from my pocket without another thought, desperate for it to be Shay.
Lucky:You still at Kane’s office?
Me:Yes.
Lucky:Hold tight. I’m coming to you.
Me:Why?
Lucky:Maverick got a lead on who took your woman, but you’ll need backup.
I frowned down at that last message, wondering what in the hell that meant.
I lifted my eyes slowly to Kane, whose cryptic gaze held no answers. I opened my mouth to tell him my buddy was on the way, but he cut me off.
“You know what, Lex?” He shot JD a glance, who shut the door with a quiet click. “I appreciate you trusting me with this. I really do. It shows loyalty.” He leaned forward and laced his fingers together. “And I always reward loyalty.” He tipped his head to one of the chairs in front of his desk, indicating for me to have a seat.
I did not sit. Instead, I folded my arms across my chest and stared him down, wondering just what the fuck he was getting at. We needed to find Shay. I didn’t have time for bullshit games, rewards or not.
He nodded once, acknowledging my choice. “So cocksure and ready to stand your ground. Just like your brother.”
