“It appears that way. Then they snuck into the airfield somehow. We are thinking it was some kind of heavy sedative, a tranquilizer of sorts.”
“A tranquilizer,” Nox said, gazing into the interior.
“Precisely,” Roland replied.
Nox let out a deep rumbling growl inside his throat. He looked around the inside of the vehicle a bit more, then shut the doors aggressively.
“What else?” he snapped.
Roland led him back to the pack’s car, then removed a laptop from the backseat. The rest of the pack stood around shirtless, waiting for orders like the loyal pups that they were.
Roland tapped away at the laptop, not saying a word, his eyes unblinking. Just as Nox was growing impatient, he spoke evenly and without prejudice.
“Frank over here works for the DMV,” Roland said, motioning to one of the short members of the pack. “So we used his login to look up the license plate, as well as possible rentals the day of the kidnapping, and the day after, etc.”
Nox lifted a leg and placed it on the side of the car, resting his head in his hands after rubbing furiously. He listened while Roland continued to tap away at the keys, his eyes scanning the screen like a dispassionate robot.
“We managed to narrow it down just before you arrived,” Roland said. “The tags point directly to a man named Archie Barton.”
Nox let out another heavy sigh, scratching at his neck and leaving deep red lines along his usually clear skin.
“Does that ring any bells for you?”
Roland shook his head, as did everyone else in the pack.
Nox sighed, motioning for Roland to follow, then instructed the rest of the pack to search the airfield as well as the forest beyond it. He and Roland headed to the local police station to report the kidnapping and this Archie person.
Nox wasn’t thrilled about working with the police, but he needed their connections. They knew who he was, of course, given his stature and reputation as a billionaire. They often gave him attitude, which was fine because he would give them attitude right back.
But the case with his brother and his wife was more than alarming, so he let Roland do most of the talking.
The constable who took their report seemed as confused as they were by a mere man’s ability to kidnap two massive wolf shifters in their wolf forms. Nox agreed and asked when they would hear back from the detective assigned to the case.
“As soon as possible,” the constable said. “I know you must be concerned about your brother and his wife. We will find this Archie fellow as soon as we can and get back to you.”
Irritation bubbled under Nox’s skin, but he kept his displeasure to himself. He was certainly growing more and more worried about his brother but tried his best to keep his mood even and approachable.
Roland drove him home, where Kelli waited for him with Violet. The little girl waved through the window with Kelli holding her in her arms.
Before he went inside, Roland made a rare snide remark about the nanny he had hired.
“Did you select her personally?”
Nox looked at him in the car, startled, but impressed. “What are you talking about?” he boomed.
A little mischievous grin grew on his wolf brother’s face. “She seems to be exactly your type,” he said. “You know, the shapely ones with a sweet smile.”
Nox climbed out of the car groaning, then snapped at his friend in the most playful way he knew how. “Just focus on the mission, not my damn love life,” he barked.
Roland, ever solemn and indifferent, gave his alpha a teasing wink.
SIX
KELLI
With Nox headed out to meet his pack, Kelli had the time and space to think about her situation without the alpha wolf’s constant presence making her head feel dizzy. He was insanely sexy. There was no doubt about that, and she figured women’s clothing just flew off around him.
And she couldn’t stop thinking about doing the same thing ... thwarting all her professionalism and just letting him go at her, allowing her need for pleasure to corrupt the long years of work she’d put into her agency.
