He’s hitting all the high scores today.

“Thank you,” she said with real warmth. “I really could use a few hours to get some things organized.”

“Go ahead,” Nox said, looking down at Violet. He didn’t even seem to notice when she left the room.

Kelli got dressed and then went to her room to set up her computer. She worked for an hour or so, but curiosity was itching at her every time her thoughts lagged. Finally, she couldn’t take it anymore and opened the baby cam and security feed so she could check on Nox and Violet.

When she saw him rolling around on the floor in a warm sunbeam, Violet by his side, it was like being shot through the heart by Cupid’s arrow. He held a soft fluffy toy, dipping it up and down in the air above Violet’s face, and he’d swoop it down and tap her nose with it every now and then. The little girl giggled and wriggled with glee.

Mesmerized, Kelli watched as Nox gathered her up and took her to the kitchen. He sat Violet in her chair, then opened the fridge, reciting the snack options as if Violet could understand every word. They agreed on Jell-O, and he pulled up a chair so he could sit right next to the baby to help her eat.

Green Jell-O ended up all over Violet’s face and chest. Nox had it all over his arms and hands, but he didn’t even seem to notice. This had gone far beyond trying to impress her with a display of father-like abilities. This was an obvious growth of paternal instinct.

Kelli couldn’t take her eyes off him. He was smoldering hot, which was undeniable, but with the easy smile on his face and green Jell-O dripping off his hair, he was ten times as gorgeous. She felt drawn to him in every possible way, and it scared her just a little.

It was scary because Kelli was ready to offer herself up to be the mother to his future children. She was disgusted with the way she was caving in to her hormones. That had to be it because sane, rational women didn’t just decide to make babies with men they’d just met.

What the fuck is wrong with me?

She had never ached for a man the way she did for Nox. She literally couldn’t control herself, and she didn’t know why. It was almost as if something greater was pulling them together, some outside force that she couldn’t grasp.

Like fate.

Kelli didn’t even know if fate was real. That could easily be a bullshit excuse her brain served up simply because he was great in bed.

But it was more than that, so much more. It was in the way he smiled at Violet and the way she giggled back at him. This wasn’t just an attraction from her lust. This man hit every center ... mind, heart, body, and soul. She wanted him in every possible way.

Right next to that knowledge ran the inevitable truth ... that she could not have him. He was a billionaire alpha wolf, and she was a nobody that ran a nanny agency. She had to pull her feelings into check before reality did it for her and broke her heart as well as her soul.

NOX

Kelli came in while Nox was cleaning Jell-O off himself and Violet. Thankfully, green Jell-O was a lot easier to clean than poop, and he was enjoying himself a lot more than he had earlier in the day.

“How are we doing in here?” Kelli asked, heading straight to Violet for a cuddle. Nox watched her pick up the baby, and the look they shared made him feel a kind of pain he’d never known, something that bloomed deep inside his chest.

She is perfect.

He was surprised, but his wolf wasn’t. This was the woman he was meant to be with, and now that he’d found her, he couldn’t let her go.

“Did you get much work done?” he asked, already going to the counter to mix up milk for Violet. Little things like that were becoming second nature to him already. It wasn’t about following a strict regime as he’d originally thought. It was being tuned in to Violet and knowing what she liked.

“Yeah, I did,” Kelli said, settling on the floor with the baby to play. “Thank you so much. I think everything is running well without me, but I will have to get back in there and soon.”

“I want to help you,” he said, sitting beside her on the floor and handing Violet her cup. “I think hiring a manager to oversee everything would really help, and then you could even expand the business if you wanted to.”

Nox knew he genuinely wanted to do things for her that would make her life easier. He also knew he had an utterly selfish urge to keep her here with him.

Forever.

“Thank you, Nox,” Kelli said, tickling Violet’s tummy to make her gurgle happily. “I’ll think about it.”

Nox felt his heart crumpling at her words. He’d hoped that she’d jump at the chance, saying that she couldn’t wait to stay here with him and devote every second of her life to him. He tried not to be disappointed, but he couldn’t help it.

I’ve failed. How do I make this wonderful woman see I’m more than just a grumpy alpha wolf?

He’d tried his hardest to prove to her today that he had what it took and that he could care for a child. Instead of letting his disappointment get the better of him, Nox decided to put in even more effort. He would do whatever it took to show her he could be the right man for her.
