On the third day, during Violet’s nap time, Kelli sat on the terrace overlooking Nox’s incredible property with a sandwich and earl grey tea. It was a rare quiet moment, the time she valued deeply for reflection and sometimes a mindful breathing exercise.

But Nox knew her schedule and barged in on her serenity with an aggressive slam on the screen door.

“May I join you?”

She was startled, almost spilling her tea. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy talking with him or seeing him, for that matter. He was a hulking mass of a man that made her bite her lower lip, considering some naughty activities that she rarely allowed into her conscious mind, especially about a client.

She smiled at him.

“Of course,” she said.

Nox came outside wearing jeans and a T-shirt, which was his standard outfit for the days spent working at home.

“Any word on your brother?” she asked.

Nox held his own strong cup of joe. He plopped himself down in the chair next to her, grunting at the same time.

“Nothing yet,” he said. “I hate not being out there. I’m so rarely on this side, just waiting around like some idiot.”

Kelli sipped at her tea, trying to hide her bemused grin.

“How is Violet?” Nox asked, changing the subject. “She seems like she adores you already.”

Kelli drank a bit of her tea, bracing herself for what would likely be a more than an aggressive response from a being known for their abrasiveness.

“Nox, I’ve found another nanny,” she said, trying to be direct. “Her name is Tracy, and she is just about to be done with her emergency health class ...”

“What are you talking about?”

“Nox,” Kelli smirked. “You knew this was coming. I told you from the beginning that I don’t normally do this, but given your extreme situation, I was fine with taking it on.”

He huffed out combatively, leaning forward in the chair and staring deeply into her eyes like he was trying to hypnotize her.

“I don’t want Tracy,” he snapped. “I want you.”

Kelli felt her loins quiver for a moment, and she closed her thighs like an oyster protecting its precious jewel. She knew that he meant he wanted her as his nanny, but the thought of anything else made her body tremble.

“Nox ...”

“No, Kelli,” he began to growl, squeezing the mug in his hand hard. “You have … bonded with Violet already. She can’t take on another stranger. She … I need you.” He stumbled on his words, eyes shifting back and forth like a miner in a dark cave.

Kelli rubbed her face and neck, feeling the stress inside her build along with something more inconvenient.

“I have to run the agency, Nox,” she said firmly. “No one else can do that for me. Tracy is a wonderful worker, and I promise you, she will fulfill your needs beautifully.”

“I will pay someone to run it,” he said, voice elevating. “I will pay them to run the agency while you stay here with Violet, and I find my brother and his wife.”

In normal circumstances, Kelli would have never allowed herself to have been talked down to so briskly, nor would she accept cash bribes. To Nox, having money was the answer to everything. Part of it disturbed her, while the other part was thrilled by the fact that he wanted her around so much.

She ran a finger around the rim of the mug, considering his offer and wondering, at the same time, why she was at all. She made a resolution to herself before speaking plainly and without any form of wavering.

“I will stay for now,” she said. “But I plan on bringing Tracy in to train her, and I’ll show you how perfect a fit she is for your situation.”

Nox gritted his teeth and looked away, his jaw as tense as iron.

“Fine,” he replied hastily. “And I’ll show you that you are the only one for this job.”

She wanted to argue with him, but she figured that a man like Nox was used to getting his way. An excessive debate would, possibly, only invite even more turmoil into their interactions. She settled on their agreement, for the time being, a secret part of her content to be around them both for a longer period of time.
