She chuckled, shaking her head, and took a sip of her coffee. “No, I’m just thinking. Now that we are here, we have a lot to talk about.”

“Save it for later,” he replied. “Right now, let’s focus on healing and finally breathing.”

She liked the idea and gave him a gentle smile back. She was okay with just being in the moment.

“Now, how do you like your eggs?” he asked as he cracked a shell against the pan. She watched it cook, and her stomach grumbled. “Just like that.”

Her phone ringing caught her attention, and she looked down at it. She answered, turning away from Nox. “Hello?”

“Kelli, this is Special Agent Wyatt from the FBI. Do you have a second?”

“Yeah,” she nodded, glancing at Nox, who looked at her quizzically.

“Is Nox with you? This is actually for both of you.”

“Yeah, just a second.” She placed her phone down, putting it on speakerphone. “We’re both here.”

“Good. I just wanted to let you know that as of right now, Archie is facing ten charges, and he was placed in maximum security. We still have evidence coming in, so there is always a chance it will be higher, but what I can tell you is he’s going away for good with no chance of coming out.”

Her heart quickened, and she looked at Nox. He smiled, nodding. “Good, the scumbag deserves to rot in jail. Maybe get taught a few lessons while he’s in there.”

She entirely agreed, and she felt relieved knowing he couldn’t do this to anyone else again. It was like a huge weight lifted off her shoulders.

“I just wanted to inform you. I hope you’re both doing well, and let me know if you need anything else.”

“We will,” Nox said, flipping the eggs. She ended the call and looked at him. He gave her a smile. “Things are moving forward.”

She knew they were, and she was excited. She looked forward to not having to look over her shoulder, afraid Archie was coming. She wanted peace.

Later that afternoon, they left for dinner with Nevel, Elise, and Violet. They were meeting at a nice restaurant uptown. Elise said they had food to die for, and she thought that sounded good. Even after being home for a week, her hunger was still there. Nox said it would go down soon, but until then, she was eating everything she could.

They were seated in a private room with a view of the mountains. The sun was just setting, and it was relaxing. Violet wore a cream-colored dress, and she squealed when she saw Kelli. Violet held her hands out, and Kelli took her.

“You’re looking well,” Elise said, glancing down at her legs. “And your ankle? Are you healing up well?”

“It’s doing better.” She smiled, knowing it had only been a week. She wasn’t supposed to walk on it too much, and her side had healed up within a day. She was doing better than expected.

“We’re glad to see you doing so well.” Elise pulled her into a hug, and she sank into it. She liked Elise, and she hoped they could get along splendidly in the future. She could picture Elise as a sister.

They all took their seats and ordered. Nevel dove right into finally being home and getting back into his routine. Elise said she would return to work in a week, and she was looking forward to it. Kelli wondered when she would. There were still many unanswered questions.

It was clear she and Nox were in love, but now that she was no longer needed, what exactly was she going to do? It wasn’t every day you saved someone’s family and fell in love.

“Hey.” Nox leaned over, looking at her, worried. “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head, seeing Nevel and Elise talking. “Nothing, just thinking is all.”

Nox gave her a smile. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“I’m just wondering when I’ll go back to work,” she admitted. “And how I’ll do it.”

“What part are you worried about?”

“It’s a drive for me to go to work, and I’m not huge on doing everything online. I just worry I won’t be able to handle it all.”

He gave her a kiss on her forehead, holding her close. “We can figure something out, and if all doesn’t work, we can move closer.”

We. She smiled, realizing he thought of them as a team. She knew that he loved her, but to know he was willing to do things to make her happy was the bee’s knees.
