“As I mentioned on the phone, I usually don’t take clients myself,” she said gently. “But given that we don’t have anyone available, I can come on temporarily. If that suits you, Nox.”
She looked at him squarely in his stunning, magnificent eyes, feeling powerful, daring, and for whatever reason, devastatingly sexy.
Nox shoved his hand forward and scooped hers, squeezing a bit too hard.
“It’s a deal,” he said with relief in his tone.
Violet dropped her drink and ran back into the hallway. Kelli, upon reflex, caught up and took the child by the wrist with firmness and delicacy.
“Let’s take a look and see what we can have for breakfast, shall we?” she said in her sweet, honey tone.
The child grinned ear to ear, clearly overblown with sugar so early in the morning.
“Cookies!” she howled in Kelli’s face.
THREE
NOX
If Violet hadn’t been present, Nox would have taken Kelli into his arms and made her his right there in the kitchen. When he opened the door and saw her, he was immediately caught by her gorgeous, red-headed beauty. She was as curvy as the valleys of the Las Vegas desert, with eyes that beamed at him like ice-blue lasers into his soul. His wolf growled in a way he had never heard in his long shifter life.
She was beyond sexy, standing there in her skirt and blazer, a lavender-shaded blouse buttoned up to the appropriate length for a professional interaction. A simple bit of flesh to tease the more curious onlooker peeked out. He adored the way she spoke, so direct and assertive, looking him in the eye without a hint of fear.
It made his loins burn, and his mind turned with the velocity of an unhinged carousel. He wanted her, and even more so, he wanted her to tame his wild heart and soul.
He grunted at himself, shoving away those thoughts and feelings, and replaced them with the task at hand, finding his brother and his wife.
Violet took some time to warm to Kelli as Nox was doing everything within his power to communicate with his pack to find Nevel. He certainly loved Violet, there was no doubt, but he wasn’t used to being left alone with her with no buffer in sight.
Kelli was his buffer, and she seemed to take no offense to Violet’s initial shyness.
“All kids are different,” Kelli said, having rolled up her sleeves and removed her blazer. “You just have to be patient and go with what works for them.”
Nox huffed, feeling like swirls of smoke were streaming from his ears.
“How long will that take?” he scoffed.
Kelli shrugged.
“As I said, they’re all different, so we will have to see what works for Violet.”
Later that morning, his mate had her things brought to her by her assistant, and she was deciding whether she would stay at his mansion or a hotel nearby. What would he have to do to convince her to stay with him? No, no. He couldn’t think that right now.
She sat with her legs crossed on the floor of the living room, smooth thighs and knees meeting flawlessly in a mermaid-style pose. She had also brought in items for Violet, such as clothing, diapers, and toys that weren’t dangerous for a toddler. She looked stunning as she watched Violet play with blocks and speaking to her in the sweetest, most angelic tone.
Nox had to force himself back into his office to do some work and to check in on the pack he trusted completely. Roland was the closest thing to a beta they were going to get for the time being. Of course, Nox would’ve preferred to be onsite, as letting go of control was not his greatest skill.
But he had no choice. Violet needed him for a few more days, at least, and if it all meant that he got to be around the orange-blossom fragrance of Kelli, well, he wasn’t going to complain.
They all ate dinner together, with Kelli having changed from her skirt and blouse to something more comfortable and durable, slacks with a loose T-shirt. When Nox walked into the kitchen, he saw her from behind ... fiery red locks held up in a bun and an ass shaped like a pumpkin begging for his hands to study.
He barely realized he let out an audible groan at the voluptuous sight in front of him when she turned and greeted him.
“Ready for dinner?”
Nox cleared his throat, attempting to shield his animalistic urges.
“Yes, of course,” he said quickly.
